Found some nice trails - northwest VA

Went to visit some friends in Harrisonburg, VA over the weekend and ended up discovering some awesome mountain trails in Northwest Virginia near the state line.

The entrance to the trails is located right next to Gospel Hill Mennonite Church. The church is located off rt.612 at 6179 Hopkins Gap Rd, Fulks Run, VA 22830.

Turn onto Long Run rd beside the church. The trail winds up into the Appalachian mountains and becomes more aggressive the deeper you go.

About 7 miles into it you will intersect with another trail and things begin to get pretty muddy/rutty. I turned around before the trail got too sketchy since I was by myself. Getting stuck out there alone would suck!

There are miles and miles of trails in this area that beg to be explored. I'm going to return very soon with some friends. Here are a few pictures:

Welcome to GWNF George Washington National Forrest. Lots or trails there. Was more but people trashed it. I started wheeling out the 15+ years ago. Do a search and you will find all you want to know. You can also look up Potts mountain trail.

Flagpole Knob is a popular run. Did it up the easy way recently in a stock 3rd gen. Only mod was 16" General AT2s.

The hard way is not as easy as before. The area that had steps is now more like a leap. A few rocks broke and it's now a 4' drop.

Western VA has a ton of beautiful scenery. Went to school in Roanoke, 311 & 460 out toward Catawba Mtn may have good options as well.

Thanks for posting. I'll have to look into it as it looks like the trains are in nice shape.

How crowded have you seen it?

I've been on the trail one time with my truck and I didn't see any other trucks, the weather was kinda crappy. I did have a couple dirt bikes pass me. I imagine the ATV trails will be more crowded later in the summer

Will do man. I might go this weekend, would that work for you?

Aww man! I would love to go with you as well sometime soon! Still working on a well needed tune up for mine, but my friends are planning some camping/hiking trips in June in that area. Maybe start out the weekend with some trails and then camp and hike the next day.

Dicktum's ridge was about the most challenging thing out there. it was on rock that had a 3-4 drop off that was off chamber. But i did see a group of 4 wd vw buses pave that by stacking 4000 rocks.

Old long run was the most fun. But they closed it due to people trashing it. So tread lightly please.

We used to have TTORA events down there and have 20-30 rigs. Fun place to lean to wheel at a easy level.

You want to beat your truck up come to Big dogs events at the Cove campground in Gore Va. outside Winchester. But i would not recommend it. There is some way hardcore stuff there.

Nice, looks like dictum ridge trail connects to long run rd. I might check it out when I go up there next time
