Dirtopia Trail Info: White Mountain (3N17)
NFS rated as "Most Difficult", but it really is not that bad. I did it with my Toyota FZJ80 on 33" MTRs, no lift or sliders. There are a couple tight spots but if you take your time you can get out without a scrape. Most of this trail is rocky/sandy hillclimbs that makes for a fun challenge. No boulder fields or anything like that. Don't run this trail alone, as you are next to a drop of most of the trail and would want to have someone else with you for backup if you get in a sticky spot. There is little to no room to pass on this trail, save for a few turn-offs, so be prepared to back up if you encounter someone coming the other way. Easiest thing to do is watch the trail ahead of you when you round a bend, then pull off and rest for a bit if you see anyone coming.
You can run this trail both West -> East and East -> West, the former being the more enjoyable way, with more options to use lockers. If you are unlocked, you should have no problems going East -> West, as it is mostly descents, but if you are going the other way someone in the group should have lockers and be in front of you for a tug.
Vehicle Types: Anyone with 31"+ should be able to run this ok, but you will want grippy tires - be prepared for a tug if not. Air down to sub 20's for best grip here. Watch for sharp rocks!

Directions:
Northwest of Big Bear Lake, CA. Enter into the forest through Fawnskin. Travel up Polique Canyon Road, about a mile west of Discovery Center (get day use pass and check for closures here). Make a right, following sign for Holcomb Valley. Turn Left when you reach 3N16. Go West on 3N16 for many miles, past Big Pine Flats. At some point near Little Pine Flats, the road turns north and changes names, can't remember the name (look at a map before you go!). You will then be out of the forest and into desert scrub for a bit. The entrance to the trail will be on your right, marked "To 3N17".
Length of Trail: Unknown Mileage, but allow for about 2.5-3.5 hours
Terrain: Rocky Trail
Off-Road Use: Limited Access
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult Difficult.gif

Happy Independence Day to you all and thank you to all who have made this the land of the free.

I just suggest the weekend of the 30th and 31st. (Gives me time to install my lift.) As far as a destination I'm down for about anything.

^ Might be too hot.

Ran Jacoby Canyon this weekend, that was fun with a couple little obstacles that required 2wd spotting. Short trail though.

Yep, nothing holding me back now. hahah. I hated my suspension setup when we went through there originally and I probably would have broken something on that route. I'm pretty much good to go through anything but rock crawling these days.

The rest of the trail really wasn't that bad, super fun actually and I'm still stock. IIRC your son was with you on that trip so I definitely understand the hesitation.
Temps up there should be manageable

Yeah. No problems for him these days, he's the one that always tells me to take the harder lines.

White Mountain on the 30th sounds good. I missed it last time due to other plans that day that I couldn't get out of.:ballchain:

I know a lot of the more common trails are in the arrowhead/ big bear area. What about something a bit more north. I'm not familiar with SoCal yet so I do not know the options. Frazier Mtn, or Los Padres?

The difference with these two areas is they are at 1400-1800 ft elevation compared to arrowhead/big bear (Holcomb valley) is at 6000-7000ft elevation....and were in smack dab in the middle of summer.

So outside of the countless amount of trails in the San Bernardino area during this time of year.. We would have to be starting our trail runs at 6am to be done by noon to escape the heat.

If people want to do that? We can but that's a whole other vote we would need to take these would be the the two questions: I dunno your guys call..I'm good either way
Majority vote wins ..Run earlier? Or Keep it the same?

I might have forgotten about the temperature element. It makes more sense though. I just haven't seen much so trying to see what is an option.

What's an option? Haha...

POOP loads!!! Amount of trails to be explored and enjoyed. You could do a new trail every single day for an entire year that at within a 4hr radius and not even scratch the surface.
I know what your saying though..you wanna keep seeing new areas and terrain and not see San Bernardino over and over I get it and I'm with you on that.

But in the summer in SoCal...we are limited if you and your rig wanna stay alive to wheel another day. Overheat your rig just one good time and kiss it goodbye.

Or like I said run early in the morning at sun rise. Which is much easier to do with just a few rigs to in and out in a good, cool time.

Also I will say..everytime I have been up big bear, arrowhead, silverwood areas etc I've always felt like I'm somewhere new the terrain and landscape up there changes drastically it's never felt repetitive to me...but I also keep doing new trails each time. A few more years and I might cover evry trail in that area..lol.

We may want to think about mountain terrain due to heat. I'm still getting around and pretty new to different trails but I vote cooler temp area. I really enjoyed big bear and running under the tree canopies.

Don't commit me quite yet. I don't exactly have a 4Runner at the moment with no eta.

Yeah you do, mi rig su rig.... you can pilot and co pilot with me in my rig.
I will pick you up and have you back home at decent time.
So yeah your name is on the right list...
Plus I have a 3rd gen we can flip for who gets the 3rd or 4th gen...so what were you saying again. "Oh you wanted to be number 1 on the commited list"..no problem brotha, sorry I didn't understand you correctly..my bad.

Damnit, I'm already I trouble for domestic violence against my 4Runner, and now you want me to cheat on it? I think that's jail time in some states.

For anyone interested in the trails "official rating" here ya go. The first 3/4 is more of blue square though and the last 1/4 may be considered black image.jpg
