Frame maintenance

Hello all

Unfortunately I live in the rust belt, so there’s some rust on the frame. Most of the rusts are surface and along the seams of the frame.

So I wirebrushed the frame and treat them to rust treatment. In the meantime, do I just paint the Por-15 on the rust areas? Or should I do the whole frame?

I’m doing a frame swap on mine because it’s beyond repair. The donor frame that I bought didn’t have any rust at all but I still coated it with POR and sprayed the inside with Eastwood because I live in the rust belt too. I say do it all at once and don’t do it again.

Yes.
Might as well protect the rest of the frame from future rust. My truck was originally an east coast car and I have had to deal with rust and I finally decided to do the whole frame with POR15. I also used the topcoat as added protection because POR15 breaks down with UV exposure. Rust can spread. Even if the outside looks fine, rust can spread on the inside of the frame. Do it all once and be done with it.

I found it though searchtempest.com. It’s a website that lets you search multiple cities of craigslist. Or even certain regions. I ended up buying mine from Tennessee for $250.

You can do that as superficial beauty, but overall it needs much more than that, frame and body damage happens from the inside. I don't get rust. Hint - look at my post footer. You said you were gonna try.

I just use the Rust Dissolver Naval Jelly on spots that have the most rust. It actually works very well but leaves white stains.

My undercarriage is only surface rust, but I do not want it to develop into structural.
originally from northern Maryland but now I live in Florida so no more salted roads


Since I do not live up North anymore, would it still be required that I remove all the rust from the frame?

Just went through your thread. Wow! Good job. Props to you with all the improvising you had to do for not using a car lift. I managed to convince my brother that he needs a car lift in his pole barn. Going to be installing that lift here pretty soon and hoping to get this project going. Actually looking forward to it. I like learning new things.

By the way I have same color truck as you. Only mine is a 98 and an auto. Amd judging from your pictures I have same frame rust in same exact spots!

I'm also on this journey... generally I sandblast and epoxy. I do rattle can some stuff but anything that really matters gets 2x coats of epoxy and 2x coats of topcoat.

I have repaired my frames by cutting the bottom out of the frame and using 1/8 plate the inside of the frame. I grind welding windows through the frame to weld it all together. Then weld a new bottom on the frame. This will let you get inside to see what it looks like as well as clean out the rust and debris. Then I paint and really heavily coat the inside with fluid film. With no holes left in the frame, it keeps extremely clean inside. Then paint the outside of frame and coat it as well..

Even clean frames will start rotting out once they are in the rust belt areas. Unless you coat the inside and seal off all the holes in the frame. :-(
