Frame repair attempt.

Hey everyone someone of you know my passenger back shock has rusted off and im attempting to make anew frame in the back as a temporary fix to get me through winter.

for anyone who is interested in specs the rear bar is 37 inches on inside and 33 inches from bump stop to back.





This sunday the frame will be cut out and new fram burned in.

Take lots or pictures. Is it worth replacing the whole back half? Or can it be patched?

Make sure to fish plate your butt joints. :boink:
 
What is a fish plate I'm doing gussets in corners and on frame I'm going to slide new frame over good old frame for an over lap

Fishplate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Same as a scab plate. Hyde is recommending you plate over/around your buttjoints to add strength. Instead of overlapping frame, you'd probably be stronger if you used interlocking butt joints kinda like a dovetail, then scab over the top of them with reinforcing plate...

my original plan was to slide the new over the old about 4-5 inches and drill holes in new and weld threw to new as well as the end piece.

Also my tubing is bigger than stock how will i have a clean butt weld if they are diffrent sizes..
 
Screw the Fishplating. This is tougher than any other element found in the universe.

They wont. Go with your original plan.

Whats your plan for body mounts/shock mounts/and shackle hangers? Anything on the back 1/2 of the frame Im missing... LSPV?
 
Its just to get me though winter till I can find a new frame.

I'm trying to get bad to make me some body and leaf mounts other wise I have to scacabge the body mounts off the frame and buy some leaf mounts
 
instead of doing all that, why not just reinforce/rebuild the shock mount?

i also see this ending badly.
not to mention adding a LOT of uneccesary weight.
 
Please explain how replacing old rusty frame metal is going to end badly?
How is that worst than driving with 3/4 of a frame missing for a foot?

I have the tools and the skills To weld it please explain your concern.
 
I think he's just doubting your ability.

Rock on Iroke!! This would be a great time to rebuild the frame and integrate a low profile bumper into the rear of the frame.
 
tell you what ill make you a new frame thats like the 2wd truck style i did one 2 years ago for a buddy it was like 400$ in metal and just time to do it.
and if you let me do this ill throw in the snowcamp body to make it complete just add you interrior and you bits and parts.
depending on how much lift you want i can up raise the body mounts and have it ready for solid axle if you can find one of those. i wont make a IFS frame on principle alone.

i have a 85 rolling frame in the shop right now so i can duplicate or upgrade your choice.
do your temp fix and if you want ill make you a new one becasue you need it and im such a nice guy. just buy the steel and ill even teach you what i know if you want.

my house will be finished in december so you can stay with me one weekend and we will get it done.
