Frame rust... how long do I have?

I found some rust on my 2003 V8. I was planning on lifting it and getting sliders soon. Now I'm not sure what I should do. The pictures are after some time with a wire wheel. I put POR 15 on it afterward. What are my options? Can it be cut out and patched?

Maybe find a local welding shop and see what they can do for you? I'm gonna do that for my rad support once its on the road.
 
Is that dirt behind there? Does the rust go all the way through the frame? Definitely clean it out. That's probably why the rust is there.
 
that has definitely gone through the frame from inside & out. could probably poke a hole in it with a screwdriver. never seen it that bad on a 4th gen. mine is from the midwest & had some surface rust where the black coating failed & some surface rust on the welds, but nothing like that.

por wont do anything for that if its just applied to teh outside & even if it was applied inside too it wouldnt help being that far gone. i would cut that out & patch it asap if you want to save it from getting worse.
 
Thanks for the responses guys. It was actually surprisingly rigid I dont think I could poke a hole in it with a screwdriver.

Either way I'm calling a local shop to see what they can do.

I realize this could vary geographically, about how much do you think it might cost to cut out and replace?

It seriously looks like the frame is rusted all the way through and there is dirt behind there, please investigate that and poke it harder.


As for welding it will be easy just a single flat plate should do the trick. Couple hundred bucks at max.
 
Rap that with a pointy hammer and it will go through. That's no longer steel in my opinion. Call around and see if someone will weld a plate in. You may be able to save some by doing the prep-work yourself.

If mine, I would cut back until I found solid steel then make a plate that fit inside the new hole. Then I'd weld it up with my mig.

When you say dirt behind there. Are you saying that there is dirt behind the rust flakes? or on the inside of the frame?

I'm saying the 1st picture with all the cracks. That looks like dirt. Not metal or rust flakes.

You can see where the frame rail, only about 1/8" thick, is pulled away and that dirt crap is all that's left just behind where it would be.

Unless the picture is playing tricks on me. :shrug:

I hit the area with all the cracks pretty hard with a wire wheel. It's metal... well it used to be now it's just rust. I called a local welding shop today I'm going to take it in there ASAP. Unfortunately it won't be for about 2 weeks. I'll definitely post an update and let y'all know what's going on.
 
Its gonna get taken care of which is most important. Mine should be on the road next week and I'm gonna get it looked at.

Once its on the road I'm taking it to a local welding shop that has some good feedback online. Ive seen a few treads on here and another site about repairing these. could replace the whole thing with an aftermarket part but the stuff ive seen done custom I like a bit more.

Depends what his goal is. If he plans to keep it for 20 more years, then yes, a new frame is probably the only answer, but cutting out and replacing the bad areas, along with diligent upkeep, and recoating the frame inside (as much as possible), will probably keep it together as long as he wishes to keep the vehicle, or at least as long as it stays running. There are no free rides... you either work on/maintain a cheaper, older vehicle you like, or pay big bucks to have a new one, that very quickly degrades to a “used” vehicle anyway... I hate having to worry about the frame rust living in the northeast (salt), but I paid cash a couple years ago for my truck, and still love it, so I do things as needed to keep it alive as long as I can. Bottom line is the extra work is WAY less than dealing with hefty payments every month, at least for me.

It's just the radiator support. If seen aftermarket ones online that can be welded in and seen a few treads on here of some different types of repairs. The rest of the frame while not perfect is decent enough. I'm gonna have the welding shop look it all over and I will be cleaning it up this spring and coating it.

Currently have a 2018 Honda pilot with a payment and due to divorce paid cash for this. Worth the cost to have it cleaned up. Every other one I looked at had high miles for around or close to the same price or was clearly an odometer rollback from some shady title jumper. Saw 2 that had frame damage from an accident. I hate people that try scam.
