Fried ECU

well. I'll admit something that nobody should ever have to admit. I hooked a battery up backwards. I wont make excuses it was just a dumb move. So i popped my nice big 80A fuse. replaced it. found some burnt wire coming off the positive terminal. replaced it. Alternator is toast. replaced it. Starter will turn but engine wont start

now im not getting Spark. the distributor looks fine. all contacts are still clean. external coil looks good. no smell or smoke or anything from the distrib so im guessing its an ECU problem. i tried the jumping TE1 and E1 but no check engine light is even coming on. although i do get other instrument lights. could be a burnt bulb, but im guessing the ECU is fried so bad it wont throw codes

Now my question, Can i Use the ECU from any 3vze engine or sd i specifically need an SR5 first gen ECU. im sure i can go find a mid 90's runner at any junkyard in town and pull the ECU but tracking down a 1st gen SR5 V6 ECU is a little too specific and may take more time.

any help appreciated. Good Lord i hope this is the last thing i toasted with that backwards batt its just been one thing after another. and electrical i my weak point. o well learn from the mistakes

Looking at the FSMs it appears the ECM connectors are different from 1st to 2nd gen.
Also 2nd gen combined the tranny and EFI ECM's into one unit.
So look closely.

FourWD1 is correct.
I too have an 88 3.0 and less than 2 weeks ago had to replace my ECU. From what I could find before I found my replacement is that the ECU for the 4 and the 6 are not the same and 1988 3.0 ECU was exclusive to that year, Or at least that is what the guy at the junkyard told me. There is one for an 88 ECU listed for $80 on eBay. Here is the link for it:

1988 Toyota Truck 4Runner ECU Computer 89661-35120 V6 | eBay

Good luck and PM me if you have any questions.
