Front brakes at 8000 miles

Just got a front brake job with only 8000 miles on the Runner. I told the service advisor that the squealers were sounding. He didn't believe me but found the brakes to be at only 2/32. Apparently I'm one of two people he's seen that drive aggressive enough for this to happen. What an honor!. It's a little dissappointing given that brakes on my Grand Cherokee lasted about 2 years for me.

This truck isn't going to be cheap to maintain.

Three possibilities:

You abuse the 4Runner.

You ride with your foot on the brake.

The front caliper assembly is sticking or defective.

Abuse? Maybe. But I definitely do not drive with my foot on the brake pedal.

Either way, I still love the truck. It sure beats driving an econobox.

I'm coming up on 3 years with my truck and still on the original pads. 30K miles and lots of stop and go traffic driving too.

I'm strictly stop and go driving. The only time I get to use a freeway is on the way to Atlantic City or the downtown area.

For what it's worth, I have about 16k on my runner and the pads are at 85%. I do a fair amount of highway and city driving. Mostly highway though. The 4Runner makes a great cruiser too.

45k and I've only changed the oil & filter every 5k and put tires on it at 27k: pads should last til 60k

Abuse? Maybe.

yeah, your brakes needs changing. i have 8k miles as well on my 4runner bought early this year and could hear and tell that all is well on this truck.

My 90 pickup that I bought new seemed slow and collected alot of brake dust so I took it in.

sure enough the calipers were stuck something done at the factory/all new brakes were put on.

8K....HMMM...sounds way to short a life to me.

At least the brake pads are doing their job. Brake material is supposed to give way so that it doesn't cut into the rotor. As far as driving, I do about 95% highway driving, so I'm never riding the brakes. Even at 50K miles, I've got 50% material left.

On the other hand, it does take a lot to stop a 2.5 ton vehicle.

Wow, that's really short for brake pads, but totally possible. My dad goes through brake pads about every 10k. All his driving is purely stop and go in the city. (This has been case with our 1990 Toyota pickup and 2000 Chevy Astro. The Tacoma hasn't gotten that many miles yet.)
