Front brakes question

I am replacing my front brakes rotors, pads and calipers on a 4th gen 07 4 runner sr5. I'm pretty much replacing going by removed old parts. The guy at Auto Zone told me that the rotors should be the 13" but old rotor is a 12.6"Dia so I went with the 12.6. Now I get all installed and find that the edge of rotors are not even with the pads. Can I exchange the rotors with 13's or do I need to exchange the calipers?

The 4th gen had two front rotor sizes. 338mm (13.3) and 319mm (12.5).

Most have the larger 338mm unless its a super base model.

can you send us a picture? if you originally have 12.6, then that's the right rotor.

can you send us a picture? if you originally have 12.6, then that's the right rotor.

I believe I could just replace the 12.6 rotor with a 13.3 and be done? I already have 17" wheels and they do clear the caliper. Would I need to do any trim to back plate for the 13.3's

I have your exact vehicle in my driveway. you bought the right rotors but the wrong calipers. the 338 mm (13.3) rotor (and matching caliper) go to the sport and limited models.

So you have three choices. 1: take the calipers back and get the right ones and be done with it. 2: get the 338 mm rotors. but you will have to cut, bend, or replace your dust shields to make them work. 3: take everything back and buy 5th gen calipers and rotors. this is a mod that is well covered in this forum (search 5th gen calipers).

My recommendation is to take the caliper back and get the proper size. I wouldn't worry about upgrading or increasing the size. I drive like an idiot on 319 mm rotors and calipers and with duralast gold everything, it stops like a dream.

I would only recommend getting the bigger rotors if you were gonna commit this rig to some heavy offroading and wheeling or serious trailering. otherwise you are just wasting time and money...

Considering that it is their fault that they gave you the wrong part? Yes. If you told them you have an SR5 then they gave you the wrong part. look at your old calipers and look for a stamp. I think it should say WS. WS is either on the big caliper or the little caliper.

from the picture, they definitely gave you a wrong caliper. that caliper is for 13 inch rotor. I would recommend returning the caliper and have them replace it with the correct one. this is the easiest way to fix it than upgrading to a bigger rotor in my opinion. it's still your choice.

When my car needs front brakes, I will be doing the 5th gen calipers, rotors, and pads.

Match the casting code on the back of the calipers. WG are compatible with the small rotor size or WH are compatible with the larger rotor size.

Job complete. They did give me the wrong calipers Replaced with the right calipers and all is good.

I was considering suggesting that but I forgot if the dust shields were the same size or not... changing those out is a ***** and cutting them up isn't something I'd recommend as a first option.

Yeah the dust sheild are too small.

As blackWorksInc said I didn't want to get into messing around with the back plate, beside next time around I will upgrade to 5th gen.

I agree, the bigger rotor is just as good as the small one. it's only half inch difference. it's the booster that counts in my opinion.

I think the 5th gen mod will have the same dust shield issue with 4th gens that came with the smaller rotors.
