Front brakes

While rotating tires yesterday i noticed front brake pads touching rotors. I can turn rotors by hand but there is a slight drag. Both sides are equal though. Is it normal for 4Runner or should I be concerned?

Are you certain the caliper is completely retracted? Id hate to read that you have a seized caliper.

BTW, someone revived one of your old threads....theyre looking for the pictures of how to replace the front bumper cover.

It sounds normal to me. The only thing pushing the pads and pistons back in is the rotor itself so a little drag is expected. However, with all the frozen caliper issues Toyota has I would pull the calipers and make sure that the pistons are not frozen.

All disc brakes drag on the disc at all times, there is no "spring" force to retract them. The hydraulic force only pushes in one direction, its either braking or not braking in which case the pads are touching the rotor, just with no force behind them. Its also how they "self-adjust" as the pad wears down.

There is actually a very very small clearance between the pad and the rotor so you get a slight drag which is exactly what you want. When you apply the brakes there is only thousands of an inch of distance to cover before braking action occurs vs. say a quarter of an inch which helps you stop faster and in less distance. It is normal unless the pads are wearing unevenly, or there is too much drag on the rotor.
