Hey y'all, Not sure if this discussion belongs here, so I'll move it if necessary. I replaced the front pads on a 03 4runner today. The calipers have 4 pistons, 2 each side. The lower piston on the inside of both calipers appears to be frozen. I was able to compress the pistons by using the lug nuts to squeeze a shim between the rotor and the piston. Ultimately, this worked and once re-assembled, the tire did appear to turn OK. Howver, once out for a road test, the rotor and brakes smoked fairly bad and after sitting back in the driveway for 15 minutes, still sizzled when I dripped a small bit of water on the rotor to see if it was still hot.
My questions - is there something about the lower inside caliper piston that does not allow for compression? Does it get retracted differently than simple compression? Are there rebuild kits for the caliper? The 4runner has 160k, original rotors, calipers - second set of pads. Any and all help is appreciated.
