Front diff upgrade time.

Finally found the diff I've been looking for cheap on craigslist. $100 for a 2007-up Tundra front 9" IFS diff. (its really around 8.7" but whatever)

I had my friends at Big Country Customs narrow it, and over the next couple weeks it will be getting fit into my donor 4runner chassis, along with my camburg kit, coilovers, a V8, and probably a new rear link suspension. Once the chassis is ready to rock, I'm going to move my body over to it.

Daryl made the new section out of steel for ease of welding mounts to once it's in the chassis, and not to mention welding the cast aluminum could have strength issues. I will either make the stock 36 spline tundra shafts work, or just go RCV and not worry about it. I want a bomb proof front end that will see maximum 35" tires. :reddance:

Anyone have any thoughts on the strength of the factory tacoma manual hubs? I'm trying to decide if I should go that route for simplicity, or go with a custom knuckle with F350 unit bearings and locking hubs.

i say if you have the budget, go big or go home. it's up to you really. i work with 350's on a nearly daily basis. those units are BEEF. more than capable of handling 37"s with ease. it would be a real one off if you get them in there.

From Personal experience: Side by side. The Tacoma manual CV Joint is smaller (balls,cage, and shaft) then the ADD CV joint .

With that said, The only time I broke a CV half shaft was with the inner tripod.

I would love to see a unit bearing build. Only problem is that the wheel bolt patterns won't be the same as the rear.
 
ohh man i like where this is going, should just build some +3" long travel a arms while your at it!

I think I am leaning that way....I would like to be almost bomb proof with 35's.

Ok that's good to know, I thought the ADD shafts and spline length looked pretty decent for a stock setup, but if the manual stuff is smaller....i'm out.

Good news on unit bearings, they are available from Trail Gear, SpiderTrax and timken in 6x5.5" bolt pattern. ;)

Finally had some time to go pickup the diff from BCC. Got it set on top of the factory diff to compare sizes and it looks like it should go in really easily. Just need to fab up some new mounts and it will look like it was meant to be there.

Hahah, still sitting there...had another kid so time and motivation are low!

I'm trying to figure out he cheapest/most efficient way to do the spindles and shafts too. I'd love to run the stock tundra shafts, and just get my 4runner hubs resplined to fit. Or get new billet hubs made up in the correct spline. That would make this swap a real piece of cake.
