Are the non JBL sound systems really that basic? JBL systems come with the 6x9 adapter pieces. Might be worth it to get the plastic from a limited6x9 is the factory speaker size. Regardless of what size you go with, you will need to purchase or fabricate a speaker bracket to mount to the over sized opening in the door.

On my '08 non-JBL the speakers are 6x9 and there was no adapter, instead the plastic the speaker is made out of was formed to fit the oversized space. There was no way to re-use any of the plastic from the speaker like I did on my 3rd gen, the 4th gen speaker was all one piece. I ended up using these Metra adapters for mine, although the speakers I got didn't line up with all the holes in the adapter so I had to make my own.

That's unfortunate. My limited has these four inch thick 6x9 spacers to pull them out from the door. Totally reusable. Maybe future users can source that part from a limited and then make a 3d printer file for them. I don't want to know what Toyota charges for them.

You're the first that I've ever heard having this. Any other install I've seen has been either a fabrication of brackets or gutting the OEM speaker to fit an aftermarket to the stock bracket.
