Front end noise, not a c/v axle?

I've got a '97 sr5 5speed, and have noticed a noise lately that sounds like a c/v joint. It all started when I had to drive to work in 4wd for a few days due to snow. I felt the c/v axles and the driver side had a lot of play in it. I replaced the axle today, and the noise continues. I am starting to wonder if it's something in the differential. I'm at a loss for the moment and don't want to start throwing parts at it. I was just curious if anyone else had experienced a similar problem and could shed some light on my issue. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
