Front End Upgrade....

My front end needs some love, so I've been reading up on upgrading to Tundra equipment. If I'm understanding this correctly I'll need:
(2) rotors
(2) calipers
(2) tie rod ends
Set of brake pads

I'm pulling all of this up on Rock Auto under 2005 Tundra. Also, need to replace my LBJ's; should I or do I need to upgrade to Tundra LBJ's as well??

Thanks

You're not clear as to what you're trying to do here. Just the brakes? Struts and springs? I don't believe the TRE's or the LBJ's from a Tundra would fit. If you're just doing the TBU, rotors, pads and calipers are all that are required, and you don't have to break anything else loose to do them.

I'm getting some serious shake and vibration when I brake; PO said he hadn't messed with the brakes in probably 100,000 miles. So with all of that I need to either replace with 4R equipment or upgrade. I just spent my funds purchasing the vehicle so $ right now has to be budgeted.

Maybe just replace rotors and pads for now with 4R parts and hold off on the pricier upgrade.

Probably best idea. You can get Brake Best stuff cheap if you're looking for something to hold you over.

IF you're doing the tundra front brake upgrade then yes, rotors, calipers, pads. You'll also need to trim the backing/dust plate. That's pretty much it other than.....

The split 3-spoke wheels will not clear the 05 Tundra calipers. You'll require either a 1/4" spacer (which I hated with a passion), more reasonably a wheel adapter (I use 1" personally...also keeps my bigger tires clear of the a-arm and frame) or some people have other methods. Some stock wheels will clear the Tundra 231mm brakes, if you're looking to change wheels.

As for ball joints, yes for 4Runner ball joints and not the Tundra ball joints.

Just to comment on the post above, in bold... Yes, some people have done that. Don't do it!! Get the correct wheels or spacers to clear the calipers and leave the critical vehicle parts unaltered.

Agree with you 100% but wanted to not leave potential stuff out. Still, will change the original post happily. :)

Have you lifted the wheel up and checked for play? You say there is shake when you brake, and warped rotors could definitely be a part of that. The Tundra upgrade would certainly reduce the risk of future occurrences of that problem, and it is a good upgrade to do.

Loose, old tie rods can also be responsible, or contribute to the shake caused by the rotors, but I would check the assembly for play before just automatically replacing them. Would also visually inspect LBJs and check for play for them too.

I had a horrible brake shake, replaced the rotors and pads, shake went away then came back. When I got my new suspension installed, the mechanic pointed out the play I had on the passage side, and showed me my worn LBJs. So, I replaced the inner and outer tie rods myself, along with the LBJs. Shake was drastically reduced. Doing the Tundra upgrade next. In my case though, the play in the wheel and visual inspection dictated the extra work. I would have just stuck with the Tundra upgrade had the other work not been indicated.

Finally, to parrot others here....Do not use Tundra tie rods or LBJs. Go OME, don't scimp on these parts. An LBJ failure on the trail would suck.

Good luck!

I used a 1/4" spacer on my 97 and they work fine. No issues.
My wife's 00 brakes were in rough condition when we purchased it; it had lots of wobble, shimmy, shakes. TBU on hers and it brakes like a dream.
