Front end work - expensive?

My 97 has nearly 209,000 miles and I think it's telling me that its time to do some work on the front end (ball joints, tie rods). How many of you have had to do this? Is it an expensive job? I'd tackle it myself if I had the right tools for this kind of job, but I don't. Any comments/advice is appreciated.

I recently had some front end work. Replaced the Rack (included inner tie rods), outer tie rods, stabilizer links, all bushings and the power steering hose because the old one was rusted to the the rack. Had the whole thing drained and realigned. The whole thing with warranty for a year set me back a little over $2000.00. Current Mileage is 130,000.

The price would vary depending on exactly what you need done and where you take it. Also the parts used would have some impact. Are you going to do just the tie rods and ball joints or are you talking bushings also. I just did the tie rods and I have read how to do the ball joints. They are not that complicated and the tools would not be very expensive to buy.

I'll replace whatever parts need to be replaced. I haven't put the front in the air to check everything out yet. I'll be doing that soon. I'm just curious as to how big of a job I might be getting in to.
