front end work

I have an 86 that needs some front end work done and I've decided to replace both sides of the parts that are bad. Inner and outer tie rod ends, upper and lower ball joints, pitman and idler arms. I don't have the money (for labor) to do it all right now and was wondering if anybody knew how difficult it is to swap out the idler arm? (that is on the passenger side...right) I am mechanically able but limited in tools. Thanks in advance.

if you replaced the other stuff, the idler arm should not be a problem for you. its just 3 big bolt on the frame and a ball joint...and recommend having it aligned afterwards.

The idler arm is rebuildable, BTW.

So do I just need to replace the bushings and grease for the idler arm. It is the only thing that is really sloppy right now and I need to be able to keep driving it.

Yes.

Tools and parts needed to replace the idler arm bushings and grease seal include:

Two replacement bushings, Toyota Part Number 90386-19005 for newer trucks, and 90385-18068 for older trucks. Please check with the dealer to be sure which bushings are appropriate for your vehicle!
Replacement grease seal, Toyota Part Number 90304-31012

Thanks fourwd1. I checked two parts places today and they said it needs to be replaced. No rebuilding. Anywhere from $68 to $121...imagine that. I was trying to avoid dealer costs although I did find something on the "net" saying it can be done for around $15. I may just pick one up at a junk yard to get me by. I found a package deal for all the above parts for $219 plus $30 shipping.

I'm in the process of installing upper/lower ball joints and urethane upper/lower control arm bushings in our 90 4runner. I'll comment when I'm finished. The removal of torsion bars is not a fun process. The ball joints are relatively straight forward though.
