Front Headlight Replacement Options for 3rd Gen - 98 Limited

I have done some searching and can't really get a handle on what my options are for replacing my fogged and fading 20 year old OEM headlights. I realize I could always replace with something OEM-like, and I would like to retain the general shape/lines of the OEM headlights.

Basically I would like the brightest possible headlights that require little or no customizing or rebuilding (as close to plug 'n' play as possible) for around $300 or less.

Anybody willing to give me some guidance and suggestions around this?

I just did hid’s for almost exactly $300 but it is a little bit of work, certainly not difficult and the results are well worth it.

Thanks very much for the suggestion and they look great on your rig. That is certainly the style I'm interested in but it looks a little over my head with the info provided. I just don't know enough about how headlights and projection headlights work.

Like, are those retrofitted OEM assemblies? I would like to know more about how you got to the point where your headlight write up starts, right from purchase choice.

If you don't have time or interest to fill me in more, no problem, I appreciate your reply nonetheless.

I also can't seem to find drop-in projectors for the 3rd-gen 4Runner?

Further, I don't know if 6500K or 5000k are better?

Thanks. I just checked then and they did not appear to have any headlight options for 3rd gen 4Runners. Did I miss something?

Reflectors are wrong for plug and play HID, yes.
Plug and play LED suck too.
The Morimoto D2S 4.0 are pretty much "drop in" projectors for our housings. With a little Dremel trimming- on the nubs where the projector bowl rubber washers sit on the inside of the reflector- they drop in and sit perfectly.
Very easy retrofit.
The 4.0's should be able to be gotten for a good price, cause the 5.0's are dropping real soon.
5000k is the better color.

Sorry I quoted the wrong price. They are $42.12ea. At Low Range. I'm sure you could find them cheaper, but I like to support American businesses that support us. Low Range has always given me good service/support.

Like others said, the TYC housings are cheap and are a good replacement. If you pair brand new housings with new, brighter bulbs it's pretty good. I have an LED light bar and after doing this exact setup I rarely ever use it now.

That setup should run you less that $100 with shipping and taxes. I guarentee it'll be brighter than what you are running now, here's a comparison to my old lights, notice the significant intensity increash. The old housing already had the 67W bulb, if I had put a stocker in there it'd be more impressive:

The ideal headlamp color is 4300-4500, but 5K will work. I would not go higher than that or you will start to limit effective headlight distance in inclement weather.

Retrofit projectors were my first real mod (D2S 3" from DDM) and my mall crawl buddies were most impressed with how well I can light up the parking lot without blinding the mall cops on their scooters.
