Hey Salvo Jimmy, thanks for sharing the info. I have a Curt front receiver on my Toyota FJC and was hoping to add one to the 4Runner. I've banged mine up quite a bit on the FJC due to the approach angle issue, but it takes the beating and is well worth the trade-offs for my purposes. Mine is flush with the bumper and has been a great bumper for front smashes and a skid plate too LOL.

Your set-up brings back a lot of good memories for me when I was a kid. My buddies and I drove drove up and down the OBX in the 80s chasing bluefish. We were from VA, so had to have something for the highway and beach. All the locals had these awesome dedicated beach rigs with rod, tackle, and cooler holders in the front. I'm trying to tell from your avatar, but it looks like you have a beach setup that goes right into the Curt receiver?

Hey guys...I'm a bit confused here. I have looked at Curt's website and a few vendors, and none of them have a front hitch that will supposedly fit a Trail Edition. They all say "except for Trail Edition". Am I missing anything?

You can just swap the hitch for a trail edition version. It'll fit just fine and give you back 4 inches of clearance on that hitch. Tuck it up to the bumper.

There are two different hitches the SR-5 and trail will NOT interchange as there are two part numbers been there done that. Jimmy you should have bought the trail set mine up take my foot off the gas and let the truck do the work...a great off road system on the beach...I welded a couple of tubes on the hitch for the receiver end and it works great with my old ray's rack. I have a Trail and want a front hitch as well, but also want to add an aftermarket skid plate like one from RCI.

Will a trail front hitch interfere with a front skid plate?

I have a 2014 trail premium and it fits without removing any of the skid plates.

Too good a deal on the SR5 and clearance on the 2016 Trail and SR5 are the same.

Thanks...I assume you have the model 31367. I did go to the Curt website, but didn't show one for a 2016...I assume the catalog hasn't been updated, but will have to check.

When I mount the front rack I use a Curt 45792 dual extender and put the Hitch Haul Z/Lift bar into the top receiver of the extender. My cooler / rod rack is mounted on the Z / Lift bar.

Yeah in fact Curt site says the 31367 only goes up to 2013 Trail. But then the site says the one I have only works up to 2015 SR5. I researched 2015 vs 2016 SR5 frame parts to determine it could work as frame parts were the same.

BTW my rack on front is a Rays as well.

OBTW another reason I did not go with the Trail was I was a bit gun shy on all the drive train bells and whistles.

The current (14-16) model years have the same front bumper but the trail has a plastic extra cover. They all use the same frame and front inner bumper, so it'll fit the same on all the 14+ years.

My 2012 Trail had a 31367 hitch on it. Its currently sitting on my shop floor. I will be adding it to my 2016 Trail if it fits. Will update shortly on installation.

Hi. Sorry for the delay. I've been away. My hitch is 31367. And I'm certain it will fit both sr5 and trail edition models. The early (10-13) sr5 had lower hanging front plastic. The current (14-16) model years have the same front bumper but the trail has a plastic extra cover. They all use the same frame and front inner bumper, so it'll fit the same on all the 14+ years.

OK I've looked more closely at the 31367 vs my 2016 SR5.

Used the inboard frame bolt where the hitch bolts on as a reference. That's the place with the single frame bolt. Measuring down from that bolt, the top of the hitch cross bar (where the tow hooks and receiver tube are attached) would have to be about 7 inches down from the bolt in order for the cross bar to clear the uinderbody panel. Thus that panel would have to be removed. That may not be a good idea as it would expose the bottom of the radiator, maybe trans oil cooler.

Also the top of the cross bar would have to be down about 4 inches from the bolt in order for the receiver tube to clear the bottom of the front bumper.

I've asked Curt to give me the dimension of the center of that bolt hole down to the top of the cross bar. Anyone here with that hitch know that dimension ??

If it is such that the receiver tube clears the bumper I may go with it. Just cut out the portion of the underbody panel and maybe pop rivet 2-3 metal strips from the front part to the rear part, going under the cross bar, so the panel can still be mostly in place. I've checked and there is nothing above the panel to interfere with the cross bar.

It's too bad Curt did not make the 31054 with the cross bar in the same relative fore/aft position and just have positioned it up about 3 1/2 inches. That would clear both the underbody panel and bumper, leaving only the mod I had to do to get the panel back on. I'll be making that input tp Curt.

OK, I double checked that as Jetboy says the frame/bumper configure for 2015 trail is the same as my 2016 SR5. I took off the underbody panel and using a tape and level can see that the bottom of the bumper is about 3.75" below the center of the inboard frame bolt. Thus it seems that the receiver would clear the bumper by about 0.25". Even if my measurement is off by as much as 0.25" there seems enough flex in the bumper to accommodate even more error.

So I'm ordering a 31367. Pictures to follow, assuming it works.

OK, put on the 31367 today. No problem. Fits just as Jetboy thought it would, right up under the bumper. I did have to use the 2 longer frame bolts that came with the 31054 as the stock bolts were not long enough, as the 31367 instructions would indicate. Also had to use some larger washers as the hole size on the 31367 were marginal, in my opinion, for the stock washers.

And of course the underbody panel had to be left off, but the cross bar and receiver tube mostly fill the void space there, so that is not a problem.

I will have to get a Curt 8 inch extender 45791 to get the front of the receiver tube out past the front bumper.

Looks good! A much more compact fit. You can barely tell it's there. As an added benefit it's pulling force puts much less twisting force on the frame rail ends, so it should be stronger too.
