this! I always stake mine down. I've been in some really crazy winds where the whole car is shaking but never had an issue of the ladder or tent blowing around.

Yeah, I preach that to all friends regarding any camping setup, especially mountaineering tents. Guy-outs are best protection from the wind blowing tent down or away.

When unpacking and packing my Tepui, I literally just lie on the top of the tent. You can roll your weight back and forth to make adjustments all the while placing all the pressure in the tent rails and not the vehicle.

Had a grand time in Death Valley. Titus Canyon, to Ubehebe Crater, to roadside camp on Racetrack Playa a couple of miles south of the crater. Next day, we drove to Tea Kettle Junction, Racetrack Playa, and got to Homestake Dry Camp early for snacks, siesta and a relaxed evening.

I slept on ground as usual. Late at night strong gusts of wind woke me up, but no worries. Then more gusts and it started to drizzle. As I walked toward my friend's Jeep to sleep under his awning, he called me from his Front Runner RTT.

The wind* had blown the floor overhang and folded it up. The ladder swung against the RTT cover that is left draped from the roof rack and got caught in its folds. In that configuration, my friend could not reach and free the ladder! He could have exited through the zippered window, but since I was already down below, I just helped him free the ladder and bring the floor back to horizontal.

One potential preventive would be to tie a guy-line from ladder hinge to rock slider.

Can one of you two tell me how high the bottom of the tent is from the top of the 4Runner roof with this front runner rack?

I just lifted my wife’s 4Runner and now it’s too high with the tent to fit in the garage and I need a couple of inches.

depends on what tent you have
the front runner quick release tent mounts add just under 2" to height of rack
I have the CVT Mt Shasta and its almost 16" from the bottom rail to the top of the ladder(closed)

if you have a standard garage entrance it is probably only 7' high, this is not high enough for most SUVs with a rack/RTT

Not sure I explained what I was asking for very well. I understand that the height of the tents vary. what is the distance from the top of the roof of your 4Runner to the bottom of the tent rails with the rack and quick release mounts?

I no longer have a 4Runner but measured it on my GX. It is just under 6" from top of roof to top of the release mounts. From top of roof to the top of the slat its 4", the quick release tent mount is 2". From top of roof to top of rack (since the sides sit up higher than inside) is 5"
My guess is a 4Runner is roughly the same since Frontrunner uses similar trays and feet for all vehicles.

I have a slimline II on top of my 05 4R and the Front runner tent. I want to mount the front runner awning with the quick release mounts on the rack (the side pictured below). Im pretty sure it will block my zipper access. Anyone done this yet?
