Front to back shock line oil leak(03 4 Runner Sport)

I have an 03 4Runner Sport with an oil leak in a line that extends from the front to the back both sides, just on outside of frame and connects to rear shock. The leak is in the middle at what looks like a small piston like activator. I don't have the adjustable suspension option button. Are these lines part of adjustable rear suspension? Could the hardware be in place even if option not installed in cab? I know the rear suspension systems are air controlled, but could the activator be controlled with oil which would explain the presence of oil in a line presumably designed to carry air front to back.
I've asked three mechanics including a guy at Toyota, and still no answer as to what this line's actual purpose is.

Bad news.
Once you get a leak in one part of that deal, you pretty much have to replace the whole freakin thing.

Hey danielpl,

I had the X-REAS on my 03 Limited, and it failed about a year ago when the hydraulic lines between the shocks corroded and leaked. Cause of the corrosion was most likely attributed to the road salt used on our Ontario roads in the winter.

My leak was on the driver's side, right where you describe. As the oil leaked out, the shocks/suspension would no longer handle as designed.

I ended up removing the X-REAS completely (it was way too expensive to repair/replace the original system) and went with a stock SR5 set-up.

The optional rear air suspension is separate from the X-REAS system.
