Front Wheel Bearing?

My 2000 Limited with 4WD has been making a sound in the front end for the last few months. I initially thought the sound was just from the tires, but a rotation did not remedy or change the problem.

The sound is a cyclical hum, much like the typical mud-tire like "wum wum wum." I only hear it in the 30-45mph range. It seems to be associated with a slight vibration in the floorboard.

Today I decided to remove the passenger front wheel and caliper so I could rotate the CV and listen for noises. Please see the attached video. I'm assuming that no noise should be coming from the hub, so do you guys think this is most likely to be the culprit?

Yup, it's toast. Easy fix though!

Put your wheel on with a few snug lug nuts. Grab the top and the bottom of the tire and see if it wobbles. That will show movement in the bearing.

I ended up getting the passenger side front wheel bearing replaced- noise is still there.

I am more upset to see that my LBJ on the side that was repaired is now leaking grease. I just replaced these about two years ago with Toyota LBJs, so I doubt the boot was damaged by anything other than the bearing repair.

Would you guys be concerned about this? For some reason I am, and I'm inclined to take it back to the dealership since LBJs are nothing to mess around with...

Do they have grease nipples?
They look like they've just been greased.

The boot was most likely replaced because it was leaking. Then they repacked it with grease, and put on a new boot. Either way how old are those LBJ's?

Unlike post #2 stating "easy fix". It is anything but easy, and I don't know how you can even think it's easy to change a wheel bearing. You'll need to remove your entire spindle from both sides of the 4runner. You should hope it's not your wheel bearing. If it is you'll need to unbolt your LBJ's from the spindle, and remove your UBJ from the UCA. Remove the your ABS sensor, remove your brake components, and that's about it. Then find a shop press to press out your hubs, and then your bearings. Install in reverse order.

How long ago did you replace the LBJs? Reason I ask is the boot rubber still looks relatively new, but the bolt heads look old. I'd think they'd replace the bolts.

These are OEM LBJs, so no grease nipples. I agree with you completely, but I have a hard time believing my 2 year old LBJs just decided to start spewing grease on the side the dealership worked on at random. I wouldn't leave it past the service department to mess something up in the process. I immediately had ABS issues after their bearing replacement as well...I waited 2hrs for them to fix that before I left for the day.

The boot wasn't leaking when I brought it in for the bearing replacement, so if they messed up the boot during the repair then it's on them to fix it (hence my post). The LBJs are about 1.5-2yrs old.

The LBJs were replaced about 2yrs ago. The boot is in great condition on both sides; there was no grease "spewage" until they did the bearing repair. GSP, nice truck by the way, I started following your Instagram account a while back and recognize the truck.

In case you need one. Seals are not oem. Bearing is. He also sells a kit with the hub. However hub is not oem. I have a set on my truck with the hub and the other side just the bearing

Thanks man. Are you lifted at all? If so 2 years might be an expected life span depending on miles and how you use the truck. Also, any play in your OTREs?

I have OME 881s and 906s, so only a modest 1.5-2.0". I replaced the OTREs when I did the ball joints (they still seem fine), but the inners deserve a check.
