Front wheel loose. Bad bearing?

A little background ...I recently replaced my driver side cv axle. My brake pedal has felt odd since then, so today I jacked up the truck to look around. First thing I noticed was the wheel is extremely loose before I removed the lug nuts. Once the wheel was off, I could grab the threaded studs on the hub and shake by hand. The rotor was also loose, but I don't think that is uncommon as the lug nuts hold that tight. Caliper bolts were tight, I even removed the caliper to check everything.

What is causing all of the slop in the hub? Is the bearing bad? I know this is probably un related to my braking issue but maybe its related. The truck drives fine, no bearing roar or loose steering.

Check the axle nut and make sure its tightened properly, if you don't tighten them all the way you get similar symptoms.

OK thanks I'll look at that. I know when I had it apart over the weekend I checked to make sure it wasn't loose, but never hurts to check again.

I know some people will have things to say about this, but when we do CV's we'll use an impact wrench to snug them on sometimes because even with a good long ratchet you won't get that axle nut to really be snug and hold the hub bits together tightly.

yup, we see it quite often.

if you run it that way for very long it will ruin the bearing.

yeh, we hammer them on with the gun. i know theyre supposed to be torqued, but we havent had any come back failed.
