Smartest thing I've read on this post is that mileage doesn't only accumulate on an engine. It accumulates on every part of a vehicle. Everything else is... Well... Idk.
With that said, in my opinion, 20k is ridiculous. It's not like it's a 16 year old corvette with low mileage. It's a 16 year old runner with low mileage. Unless a collector buys this, I'd be more than surprised if anyone paid that. And by collector, I mean one of those guys who can afford to buy anything he wants. Don't get me wrong.. I understand there are people out there that have the money and might be interested. But most people on this forum seem a little more practical. people sell fully modded and armored runners with 150k for $8500 on this site. And they sell fast! EBay or an auto auction who specializes in off road vehicles is probably your best bet. I LOVE the 3rd gens but personally, I'd buy a 2010 for that price. Lol.

While I see your point I do have to disagree. People that would be interested in this 4Runner are looking for a vehicle that will last them a long time and something that is in stock forum. Just because one has mods doesn't necessarily mean it is worth more. I've sold quite a few 3rd gens and I can tell you that one in stock form that has been maintained very well will sell for more and faster than one that has mods done to it. The way prices of these are going up I can honestly see the OP getting close to that. Having driven almost every year of 4Runner 99-16 I can tell you I much rather spend a lot for a low mileage 3rd gen than any of the new generations. In fact I just did lol.

Yeah I thought about the fact that whoever buys it will be able to have it for a really long time. That's definitely in the pro category. But that post took long enough to write on my phone so I didn't cover everything I wanted to. It's a good point you make. As for the price between stock and modded goes, I understand mods can be hard on a vehicle so a stock runner might be more structurally sound. However, I don't believe that wheels and shocks and tire swings and full roof tracks with leds and sliders and bumpers and snorkels cause enough damage to a vehicle to make it worth less than one without the $6k+ in parts that the modded one comes with. Pretty sure the only thing that is really even hard on them are the lifts.

The mods were obviously installed for off-pavement usage, which when done frequently accelerates wear on everything. Even if the modifications are harmless, the additional usage caused by those parts will. If you really want to restore a 3rd gen to a condition similar to that, I have no doubt that the cost of OEM parts and labor needed will hit 20k like nothing. Again, no modifications. The real money is in clean stockers. This is why clean 1st gens are being projected as becoming a future collector vehicle. A fair bit have been turned into beat up trail trucks so finding a clean one gets harder and harder. The same applies to these. The first few 3rd gens rolled off the lot exactly 20 years ago in November of 95. They are reaching that status in desirability, especially when you consider how many have been exported to third world countries which has depleted a fair bit of them in the north east US.

These are also good points. I have been wondering exactly how much "wear and tear" the weight of after market bumpers could cause. I would assume I'd the suspension was upgraded that it wouldn't be much. Most of the stuff other than a lift and added weight, I can't see harming a vehicle. I guess when I got 4runner fever, I wanted mods like many other people do. But I suppose there are also people who want stock. I'm not saying anything bad about his runner. I think it's badass. I wish mine had that low of mileage. But only because I'd then mod it for excursions. Ha ha

Rubber deteriorates over time. You probably need at least $3K in maintenance on that car.
Were the fluids changed out regularly? Coolant breaks down over time. I can't imagine having 17 year old coolant being a good thing.

That's what I meant when I said probably better suited for a collector or someone at an auction with that kind of money to throw around. There is a market for anything and everything out there. However, from what little I've seen on this forum, this place seems to be more practical. But having said that, what better place for this 4runner to be listed? The right buyer will probably be searching on here.

I know 20K seems like a lot for you younger guys but if I totaled my truck I would seriously consider buying this 4runner. If it was a manual I'd probably jump on it. Even if you took out a loan...what's that? $250 a month for 5 years? Put $4000 down, $8000 down & the payments get cheaper.

Years of sitting in the sun, and years of low use/inactivity are just as bad if not worse than years of regular use... Sitting idle is bad for the car. It would be a different story if it was bought new in 2000. Everything was drained and it was stored in a climate controlled warehouse for the past 15 years...

If it were me I would sell it immediately to the guy who offered 15k for it... that is way more than its worth.
After replacing all the brake lines, wiring, gaskets, seals, coolant, transmission fluid, oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, tires, etc... your looking at a lot of $$$ in maintenance...
