Lol yeah.. that was just my rebuttal seeing how I've already stated my opinion on this thread and so has everyone else. Clearly nobody should assume anything when purchasing a vehicle. I just meant that considering the price tag, we should all be able to assume it's been properly taken care of. Haha

I'd like to do more than assume with a $20k price tag though. That would be 2300 miles a year. I've done more than that in a couple weeks many many times before.

Me too, but I've only put 3000 miles on my truck in the last year.

I just found a 2002 with 34,000 miles and they want $14,900 for it. I know many say you can't base prices by using Kelly Blue Book, but I still believe it's a valid tool and it's how I determined when I was doing my search for a low-mileage 3rd Gen whether the asking price was fair or not. Patience paid off and I did find a 2000 with 111,000 for $6300. It would be awesome to own this 2002 with 34,000 miles but for $6000 over KBB, I don't think it's a good deal.

I agree with some of the others commenting on this post that $20,000 is pretty ridiculous, but hey, there's probably some collector type out there with tons of disposal income who would love to have it.

Like somebody suggested, you'll probably have a better chance selling it on Ebay or Craigslist because of the larger audience you'll be advertising it to.

Well, it's already up to $14,300 and there's 6 days of bidding left. He just might reach the $20,000 he was asking for. Truly amazing what people are willing to pay for one of these rigs but I guess when you compare to what it costs for a new 4runner these days, $20,000 doesn't seem so bad. It still wouldn't be me paying that for a 16 year old truck, regardless of the miles, but I have to admit it will be interesting what the winning bid will be.

Nobody made mention of insuring the truck - a 1999 4Runner at a large purchase price. Unless specialized insurance could be found anyone buying this might be in for a rude shock if involved in any sort of accident. That $20,000 4Runner becomes a $2000. to $8000. (unlikely the $8K) 4Runner as quickly as some moron can blow through a light and T-bone it. But, of course, that kind of thing would never happen to me (sings the chorus).

You have to find an insurance company that will give you "agreed value" coverage. I need to do this with mine. I've had full coverage since new but I'd probably get $5000 totalled when I've put $10,000 into it over the last 2 years.

also, how can it be removed from ebay? thought they had to commit to the sale if it was put up for auction on there.

It's to bad it's not a 96-98 I'm not a fan of the longer front end in that color combo at all. Anything under about 7k id go for the 3rd gen style but when your talking 15k or more a 4th gen is much more bang for the buck. The only thing the 3rd gen has going for it in the 15k price range is the collector attributes. And as great as clean older 4runners are they will never have land cruiser status. Def a rare buyer.

I was rooting for the Seller during this whole debate but then I saw the part about the "garage find" in his craigslist ad. I also saw it listed on ebay for a day or so. I think everyone should agree that the vehicle appears flawless.

Getting back to the "garage find", I guess he forgot he owned it several years ago and threw out the title. This past fall the wife probably yelled at him to clean out the garage. To his amazement, he opened up the garage door and said "Holy sh*t, I have a 1999 4Runner"!

Yeah that's strange. Didn't quite get what he was saying there. Thought he explained some details about the vehicle better on craigslist. But I'm sure that was after we all badgered him on here. The 4runner is definitely super nice! And it's for sure possible to be out of the country a lot if you're a military pilot like the hellie leads one to think.

All you have to do is change the front bumper, the 99+ models have many upgrades that make the 96-98 have a lower resale value.

It's probably not too puzzling. This whole episode smacks of one of the scams in which the "seller" cops photos of an item online somewhere and writes listings in various places looking for someone dumb enough to send them cash via Western Union somewhere.

If a hopeful contacts the seller by email there's often a claim that the vehicle (or whatever) is temporarily located overseas but will be shipped to the buyer free of charge once payment is received.

Well girls, once payment is received it's the end of the story. You won't be able to get help and will never track down the scammer.

BTW, eBay's much advertised "buyer protection" will not apply to any vehicle which is more than ten years old. It's in their fine print.

No, any eBay seller can stop his/her auction at any time. To stop it without a sale the seller needs to cancel any and all bids and they make it easy with a few clicks.

Ebay requires that the seller chose from a list of reasons for the closure but accepts any of them. They want anyone who sells out of auction to pay the fee but sellers are left "on their honor" when it comes to paying.

yeah, why exactly has he owned it for the last however many years and doesn't have the title??
pretty sure you should have the title if you're selling a vehicle.
