FTS 5th gen Snorkel Install

I felt a little pressure since i have been sitting on this 5th gen snorkel for a few months now. I decided t go ahead and install it and take a couple pictures of the install.

EDIT: These are like the FJ Snorkels, it is a flat template on a curved fender. Because the bolts go in at a slight angle the hols have to be drilled oversize so that the bolts will line up. Having installed a few of these I can tell you from experience following the template works the best, and you do not need to cut anything on the snorkel. Next person that buys one and wants to come by the shop in Ohio, I will help with the install and we can make instructions.

First you have to tape the template to the fender using the flare as your only guide and reference point.

then center punch and drill holes to 9/16 inch.... yes 9/16 inch, it allows movement of the snorkel for alignment and also for the angles of the bolts.

now take a deep breath and cut a 3 7/8 hole in your fender... then smooth and dress all the holes with some liquid tape to prevent rusting.

i sprayed the back side of the snorkel with several coats of plastidip for a layer of protection against against rubbing...will it help? :shrug:

the snorkel will stick through the inner fender and directly into the air box (I removed the airbox for the picture.

At some point you have to pull back your fender liner, now would be a good time..

In my case (i have the TRD CAI) the snorkel tube has a pretty good gap around the inlet. I spoke with the manufacture last night and they said on the stock airbox it is a snug fit and you should silicone it into place once the snorkel is bolted down.

I can see this being water tight if i had the stock intake, and i could see it being so with a little modification on my intake.

UPDATE

I have been asked a couple times two questions.
#1 did i ever make the snorkel water tight? Yes, with some black silicone hose and Black (sensor safe) RVT.


#2 do you have to drill holes in the A-Pillar? No, it does come with self tappers for that, but I used thick double stick automotive tape.

Simply amazing!!.. I'm glad someone finally makes one! And that is AWESOME that you're going to take it to Greenland and beyond! My only gripe with this snorkel is the placement of the big hole for the air.. and because of that they had to make the bottom piece REALLY long.. i feel like it wouldn't be hard at all to route it closer to the firewall. what do you think about this?

I said ferry, I just said it because it was the first thing that came to mind and this thread is not about our trip to Iceland. We are taking a commercial ship that makes the trip 3 times a month. It's $790 to have your vehicle taken from Canada to Iceland and you have to go by their schedule. I have not figured out Greenland yet, but we will, I just want to say I drove my trucks in Greenland.


If Greenland goes well we are doing the Arctic circle next.

You are 100% right, the plumbing could be done inside the fender and make the snorkel easier to ship and look better, but at least it works. My biggest gripe is the little over $600 price tag.

Greenland is just someplace I want to say I have driven, and I have thus far been unable to work out the particulars. Perhaps once we are in northern Canada we will find the option we are looking for.

On a side note there is a very good Korean restaurant on business 190 just off post out the main Fort Hood exit if you like Korean food.

It's not for everyone, that's for sure, and it is both overpriced and bulky.

As far as Greenland goes...I am indifferent, we have been to china a few times, Korea a few times, Russia once and even to the wilds of Canada, I'm ready for a road less traveled, and I think a trip to Iceland and or Greenland would be fun(ish).

There is another thread on this, but here is the gist of it.

FTS makes these snorkels, they are in Taiwan, the snorkel is a mid blowing $610 shipped to the US.

I currently import from China and have an annual bond to do so. If I order 15-20 of these and have them sent to my shanghai factory and then put on one of my normal containers I can get the price down to between $375 and $400 each.

Problem is, there are not 15-20 people wanting to buy a snorkel for a 5th gen at the moment. So I will likely order one last snorkel for my TE and pay the $500 to have it sent to shanghai again.

I've done the same thing when I moved from Finland to the Netherlands. So much more of an interesting experience than your traditional ferry/cruise ship.

UPDATE: I have been working with FTS and if 10 people want to get a snorkel I can import them for an end user price of $392 Shipped to your door. That's $221 cheaper than full price. If (doubtful)20 people ordered the price would drop to $366
