When I bought my 4-R salesman suggested replacing fuel cap once every couple years. I noticed that cap is weak looking due to plastic design, but changing it that often isn't it overkill?

i'd give more weight to that if it actually came from the service department, but the salesman?! my '94 4Runner had over 175,000 miles in 7 years and i never replaced the gas cap... don't go fixing it if it ain't broke!

I don't know of a single car or truck that has used a metal gas cap for YEARS now.... everybody is using plastic caps.

I've also never heard of anyone replacing their gas cap unless they lose it. For the most part, gas caps last for the life of the vehicle....

The one thing that really annoys me from TOYOTA is both my Corolla and 4Runner show check engine when the gas cap is even slighly loose.
The 4Runner is way wors just because of gas cap it will show check engine and 2 more yellow lights and will stay like this for day or two.

to tighten your gas cap......jus turn until you hear a click. it should be no problem. as for your gas cap.....you shouldn't have to replace it that often. my uncle's m3 failed an emissions test because the gas cap was leaking pressure. the car had 90K miles on it.

all modern cars will do this. the fuel system needs to create a vacuum, which cannot happen if your gas cap is even slightly lose. it usually takes 3 trips of considerable distance for the ecu to decide that the leak is gone and the light to go off.

Almost.

The CE light is part of the OBDII diagnostics that was mandated in 1996. Part of that is sealing the gas delivery system. When the gas cap is loose it will throw a CE light. You can get it reset with an OBDII scanner or it will reset itself if the error is cleared for X number of starts.

I have a BMW M3 ('98) and there was a recall on the gas caps a few years ago. They also mention that it should be replaced every few years.

not sure, but the reason most gas caps have gone to the plastic design is to lessen the possibility of static when removing the cap that would happen when they use to be metal. you would create an arc between the cap and gas tube when removing the cap if you failed to ground yourself when either touching the pump or exiting the vehicle.

i had my 98 runner until jan-04 with the OE cap and i never had any problems as long as you turn it till it clicks.

Another salesperson exposes his(her) ignorance.

Literally millions of cars and trucks use the same design fuel cap.
The reason it clicks is so you don't tighten it so tight that you cannot
remove the cap. If there was a problem it would be widely publicised.
