Fuel Consumption is high..Solved

Hi everyone I have 2015 TE, with 150,000 miles on it. I put magnusson SC on it 6 months ago circa 130K miles on the clock. Tires are yoko's geolanders 285/70-17. I also have a mild lift 2.25 on the front and 1.5 in the back. Otherwise, car is stock with no added wait such as steel bumpers. I had lift and tires since day 1 with 11k miles on the truck. Consumption increased a bit but not that much I would say I was consuming 11 to 13 L/100Km with mixed city and highway.

After installing the charger fuel consumption was normal, I could easily get 500Km on a fill up with 1/4 left in the tank. Recently I noticed that I cant reach 400Km per tank, and Have to fill up every other day. Computer is showing 17.5L/100km I think its around 20L/100km which is crazy high. No further mods on the vehicle so nothing changed. I have no lights on the dash and truck is running fine, no issues at all except for the fuel consumption.

Reached out to magnusson who confirmed that I have the latest tune and to go back to stock wheels and tires.

I'm looking for advise here as to what could causing such a high consumption blocked cats? Spark plugs? Air filter, MAF? I know the tires are heavy but its the same before and after the SC. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Reset the dash indicator for MPG to see what you are averaging. Search forums on before and after MPG for using a SC. Heavy foot on the pedal to play with the SC ?
 
It's also winter now. MPG drops as the air density is increased, requiring more fuel. I see the same thing with my own truck without SC and with my turbo vehicles. Hard to escape it.

Calculate your fuel consumption by hand (or get an app like Fuelly to do it for you.) Pay attention to your circumstances--any change in DD habits, are you driving more aggressively than before, dirty intake air filter? Take good notes and see what you can observe.

Most fuel consumption issues are driver related--when my wife complains about her fuel consumption, it's usually waiting to pick up kids at school with the AC running; when she's actually driving she gets good mileage.
 
I have 135k on my 4Runner, the last 45k with the Magnuson on it. Running 285/70/17 LT tires on it and get around 16-19mpg. In the winter I usually see around 15mpg. Like others have said, check air filter, spark plugs, general maintenance items. Odd to see a change like that without something else changing along with it.

Check all 4 wheels, the inside parts too, if there's excessive brake dust you might have a dragging caliper. I did at about 140,000 miles.

Actually, the denser the air, the more Oxygen there is to burn the fuel. So once the engine warms up, the fuel consumption should be better. No so much on short trips.

New spark plugs just delivered, I’ll replace the plugs along with new air filter and report back.

If catalytic converters have carbon built up it should give a check engine light right?

Did just that, computer showing 16.5L/100Km after the commute to work.

No change to driving style, spirited driving mostly.
 
Please check of these :

Poor engine oil
Poor quality fuels
High usage of air conditioning
Worn out tyres(low psi tire pressure)
Wrong gears in wrong ways.

Unless your commute is closer to 150km than 15km, a single commute is worthless for comparing fuel economy. And if you live in a highly congested city like Dubai, measuring your fuel economy during your commute likely has very little to do with your vehicle and very much to do with the conditions of your commute.
 
Sounds to me like you're just driving harder now that you're used to the SC. The SC adds power and the only way you add power is with more air and fuel. Every time you use boost, your truck is consuming more fuel than stock, sometimes significantly more.

This is exactly why the shift to smaller displacement motors with a turbo(s) to improve fuel economy is a bit of a farce. The smaller engines make the vehicles slower and laggy off boost, but MPGs are better than a bigger displacement naturally aspirated motor. When you dig into the throttle and get boost, the acceleration is much better, but MPGs plummet severely. For some applications like trucks, the motor is under boost almost all the time and often times will see worse MPGs. The V6 TT Ecoboost Ford F150s are prime examples. MPGs are actually worse than the much less complicated naturally aspirated and far more reliable 5.0 V8. And that 5.0 isn't much slower and sounds far better.

There's no free lunch here with boost.

I'm trying to determine why consumption jumped recently with same conditions , routes and driving style.

Update: new air filter installed, average dropped to 15.8L/100K, commute to work is about 100Km. 30K km on the old filter, root cause dusty climate. Maintenance interval need to be reduced to suit.

Went to the mechanic to replace the spark plugs, silly me trusting what was received from Amazon is the real deal. Technician removed the old ones, grabbed the new ones to drop them in. Plugs had the correct part number "Denso IHK22", all correct packaging but did not look right (will try to upload pictures) they had defects, cannot be gapped and two of them had damage on the thread, conclusion fake Denso plugs. Ended up reinstalling the old ones.

I just saw this thread, but it seems you're on the right path. Maintenance will be absolutely key, especially with a SC installed. Spark plugs, air filters and engine oil will be critical to monitor and change more often than standard recommendation. Given the dusty climate, I think air restriction in a dirty air filter could have been one of your main issues. Changing the plugs with whatever plug your SC manufacturer recommends would also be a great idea. I'm not sure if you use the same plugs with a SC installed, as you would with the stock engine?

When i get a full tank of gas it wont go 400 miles just 380+
