Fuel Filter Help

Hey guys. I want to change the fuel filter on my 2002 4runner v6 and wanted to know how to replace it correctly. I believe the pressure needs to be relieved first. How? And how often should the filter be replaced? Thanks in advance, huero.

Toyota says it's a lifetime part but I'd change it if you have a bit over 100k but most people never replace it.

i have 138k on mine nothing wrong with it i tryed chaning it once end up rounding the nut a little so i gave up.... just undo ur gas cap.... also useing a torch to heat up the nuts helps :headslap:

Wow! I asked the guy behind the counter at the dealership when they should be changed. He said he had no idea. So I bought the filter. runner has about 50,000 miles on it. The filter cost me 40-42 dollers.

There are plenty of people who go 300k their fuel filters and no issues but with me being kinda anal about preventative maintenance I did mine at 111k and I got the filter at Pep Boys for $25.

You NEED tubing wrenches!

To change the filter you MUST use Metric Tubing Wrenches, or you will ruin the fittings. Also, they are on there quite tight. Access is a bit difficult due to the odd angle. I did mine, but had to retighten the fittings due to a small leak. Also, DO NOT use a torch as someone suggested. Remember gas burns!!!

First of all undoing the has cap does NOT relive the pressure in the fuel lines, just any pressure in the tank from heat, expansion etc. And use a torch to heat up the nut on the fuel filter?! Ok stop and think here...torch+fuel. What do you think that little formula equals?

One way to relieve pressure is to remove the fuse for the fuel pump and start it and let it run until it dies out.
