Fuel filter installation problem

Hey! First time here and 1st post. Got a little problem hopefully someone can help me with. I have 1999 4runner V6 4WD.

I installed a new fuel filter today and everything went pretty smooth until I the end. The fuel line bolt on the engine end will not seal and gas sprays from the bolt. I did it twice to no avail. It seems on that end, that gas line has no play unlike the other end thus getting into the retaining bolts somehow makes it spray? Anyone got an idea on why its leaking and how to fix it?

Forgive the question, but you ARE using TWO wrenches to tighten the flare nut? This doubles the effective closing force.I also found it better to put the flare nuts on fairly tight before tightening down the filter mount. It makes it easier to avoid cross-threading which I hope you have not done.

Make sure you clean the threads like shiny! If clean and oiled slightly you should be able to smoothly hand tighten quite a bit. This will let you know if you cross threaded.

I just did my 1st T4R fuel filer replacement today as well. I found after I did the above it only took maybe a 1/4 turn to seat and seal the flare nut. You must use 2 wrenches as suggested above.

Make sure the flare lip is making contact nicely with the fuel filter opening before tightening the nut. You want to tighten the nut firmly, but too much torque will damage the mating surface.

I also installed a new filter yesterday. I left the bracket that mounts to the underbody loose so that I could move the filter a little bit to line up the fuel lines. Once I did that I was able to attach with no problems and no leaks. Good luck with the fix!

First attach the fuel lines to the filter before attaching the filter to the body.

Several years back I replaced my filter with a Fram. It leaked like yours. I returned it for a new Fram. Same problem. I returned the Fram and bought another brand. Then no leak! Possible bad Fram batch with faulty seats.:high5:

Well I could not get the leak to stop. I even tried to put in the old filter and it still would not leaking from the same bolt. Anyone got any ideas on this? The screw has not been stripped and screws in by hand. I even tried putting both filters in without the retaining brace. Looks as if I will have to get it towed to a repair shop to get it fixed. Unfortunate for something that should have taken 30-40 minutes.

x brand leaked. Threw it away and bought OEM and the flare nut wrenches. Took <5mins with the correct part and tools.

Are you pressing the lines all the way into the filter before you even start threading the nut? I've seen it a few times where people start using the nut to seat the fuel line in the filter and they've always leaked.

i had the same problem, the filter's flared end on the engine side was asymetrical and would leak. i replaced it with another brand and the leak stopped.
