Fuel filter

Guys, swapped out the fuel filter today and noticed a big change in how the 4runner started and accelerated. It must have been the original, when I placed in the bucket nothing but grime came out of it.

Best part of it was that it was pretty easy and no leaks after new filter installed! I think I'll do this every year. Does anyone swap it out as usual maintenance?

I have 161k on the original filter. I went to dealer just to see what the filter would cost and the parts guy asked me why I wanted to change my fuel filter? WTF?:redbrick:
 
I need to do this as well 177k and original filter is on there. Thanks for letting us know about your experience. I plan on just changing my fuel filter and all fluids once a year (aside from oil obviously). I want this thing to last. Plus I put atleast 20k on my cars every year.
 
I did mine 50k miles ago @ 150k and it was grimey to say the least. Lifetime fuel filter, yet they stock a shelf full of them at the dealer. Doesn't make sense.
 
Thanks for your comments. I have 186,xxx miles on it and want to keep it for a while. I think i'll swap it out every year from now on.

Up next is the trans flush and greasing the driveshaft. Hope it goes well!
 
What brand filter is best? Or does it really matter?

Ive seen Wix, Champion, Baldwin, Bosch, AC Delco, Hastings, Pronto......

I think I remember that someone used a Wix fuel filter here, or maybe it was on YT, and its diameter was larger than OEM, so fitting it in the bracket was a PITA. But it may have been a Bosch.

Going with OEM takes any guesswork out of the equation.

But hey, try the Wix, and report back on how well it is doing for ya down the road.
 
With all the rust on mine, it proved to be one of the most daunting tasks I have performed to date on my runner... but yes, instantly noticeable improvement at 155,xxx!

X2...my dealer had to order my filter! He told me I was only the third person to order a fuel filter from him...and he's worked there for 10 years! Oh well, my filter comes in tomorrow...with 156,xxx...I'm excited to see (feel) the difference!!
 
What was the difference in the startup and how much did it change?

My startup is a bit slow (1 - 2 seconds) rather than that instantaneous start (like half a second).

Had the exact same experience at my Toyota dealership. Two parts guys told me they don't even stock fuel filters because they aren't supposed to be changed. Sounds like a load of :toilet: to me..

happen to have the Toyota part number?
 
I changed mine out tonight with a filter from O'Rielly, my truck has a little over 200,000 and it was the original filter. The rust made it a PITA and I had a slight leak on the tank side with the new filter but another 1/2 turn tighter stopped it. Well the new filter didn't seem to make any changes good or bad, oh well I feel better its done.
