Fuel float, fuel cap

About a week ago my fuel gauge went to zero suddenly while I was driving back from Monterey. A quick check indicated that I didn't have any leaks, but the truck registered as E. When I took off the fuel cap and put it back on and cycled the engine it showed it as 1/4 full (it was actually completely topped off) then wobbled between E and 1/4 on the way home and it was like that all week since.

Toyota dealer said I need a new fuel float, buddy said I need a new fuel CAP.

Since once costs over a grand with labor and the other is 30 bucks I bought the cap and it seems to have fixed the problem. Am I GTG or is the fuel float still on its last legs?

It could still be the float. Mine went out and I had to replace it. I did it my self but was working at a shop at the time so I had access to a lift.

Will a bad float cause any issues besides the fuel light?

I can drive using the trip odo to estimate between fill ups.

Spending more $$$ on this 7 year old truck is not in my top 10 things to worry about.

No, it wont cause any other issues. Like you said just go by the odo, ignore the gauge.

I just changed the sending unit. Part is under a hundred bucks and local shop Did the work for around 300.

I want an accurate gauge so it was worth it for me.
