fuel gauge issue

When I bought my 97 in December the fuel gauge didn't work and was pegged below empty. Well a couple weeks ago, I dropped the tank and replaced the sender unit and it instantly went to about 3/8 of a tank which I thought was about what was in it. Well, it never dropped as the tank ran empty. Its has steady climbed to about 3/4 of a tank now no matter how much fuel is in it. The gas light does come on when its getting low, but the needle never moves. Anyone had or seen this issue?

There's a calibration procedure you perform. Here's a post a while back about it. Find TheDurk's post as he cut's and pastes the procedure from the TSB directly. Hope this helps!

I had read that last week, but assumed it was for 99 and newer runners, and the fact that it doesn't change at all with the fuel level made me think it wasn't a calibration issue. None the less, I will give it a shot once I get out of the tree.

im assuming you dont have this problem since your gauge works -better- than mine, but there is also an issue with the meter plate in the dash, not just the sending unit. if the calibration doesnt work, this may be your problem. unfortunately, even though toyota readily acknowledges the problem with a TSB, the discontinued the part for the fix. so junkyard it is.
