The fuel gauge on my '97 seems to work fine untilk i get to around half of a tank. WHen it goes to half tank or anything below, the gauge will just read empty. I replaced the instrument cluster, but it did not fix the problem. Is there some kinf od sensor/sending unit in the tank that I can replace?

yes there is.
you can probably diagnose the level sensor using an ohm meter. A repair manual or someone with direct experience might be of some help here.

The dealer could identify the part you need. Typically, the level sensor is a float arm pivoting with a resistive card that attaches to your fuel sender in the tank.

It's pretty common for the sending unit to go bad/intermittent.
You can pull it out and spray it with some electronic contact cleaner and it may start working again.

Your talking about the sending unit in the tank right? How hard is it to get the tank off?
