Fuel / Ignition Gremlins (3RZ-FE)

Today I got frustrated and tested everything again starting from the beginning.

On the fuel side, the pump and pump (circuit opening) relay are brand new. The fuel filter has about 40k miles on it. The injectors have maybe 1k miles on them, all 4 replaced at once.

On the spark side, the cam sensor is brand new. I tested the MAF sensor and crank sensor today with my multimeter and both report the FSM resistance levels. The battery is putting out 12v and I read 11.9v at the Coil harness connectors. I tested every relay under the hood and under the dash again today, all check out. I looked at every fuse and they are all clean.

I tried to do a compression test, but my tester is pretty old and corroded so it's not reading anything on any cylinder and I don't have a male-to-male connector to test it with my compressor.

I am back to thinking that I am not getting spark, but I DEFINITELY saw it last weekend on multiple tests over both coil packs.

Can it be the ECM? I pulled it today and there is no visible damage or corrosion. I disconnected the battery for an hour to let it rest.

Can the crank sensor or the MAF sensor report the proper resistance but still have failed and be reporting incorrectly?

Oh, I have not manually turned the engine because I didn't want to remove the fan to get in there, but when I crank it nothing sounds lumpy or chunky.

The Factory Service Manual has a step-by-step diagnosis for a non-start condition. I suggest starting there since you've checked all the easy/obvious ones since it seems your problem is more complex than the average one we see on here. If you don't have it there's links in the "3rd Gen Documentation" thread to download.

P.S. you can also turn the key to "ON" and test for voltage (not resistance) on the connector to make sure it's powered.

I don't mean to insult you or nothing, but are you sure all the vacuum hoses are plugged in? Nothing was switched?

No worries, I'm not that sensitive. :)

I don't see any vacuum hoses hanging, but some of them are getting pretty dry. I could understand running rough from a sketchy hose, but not even trying to start is beyond a vacuum leak I think.

I will work on testing voltage today for the MAF and Crank sensors and looking at the FSM tests.

Thanks for your input, it is greatly appreciated.

Made it through every step of the Ignition testing until I get to the ECM, which requires the engine to be idling.

sad trombone

I guess I'm going to start searching the junkyards for an ECM.
