fuel injection

OK hope someone can point me in the right direction. A couple of days ago I was driving into town, I pulled out to pass and hit the passing gear, the toyota picked up speed and about half way around it went flat, no more speed, it was like I was at an idle, this was at about 65 mpg. I have had it up to almost 85 but had eased it up to that speed. Do these things have a governor or did I just run out of fuel pressure. ?????

just a suggestion:
add your year, engine and transmission to your signature so folks know what 4Runner you are talking about

Is this thing an 85 22RE or a 91 3.0 with an auto?
lots of variables

More info helps others to help you

Sorry, I didn't think about that........It's a 1993 4runner 3.0 with auto trans. Its a new rebuilt motor. This is the first time this has happened.

The 3.0 supposedly has a rev limiter at around 5700-6000 rpm, but no speed (mph based) governor. Sounds like you hit some kind of fuel flow limit - basically it shouldn't have done what you experienced.

(Unless you were holding the auto tranny in 2nd gear and actually got the engine up to 6000 rpm.)

I didn't even look at the tac, to worried about oncoming traffic. Hell of a thing, passing a truck and your vehicle just quits on you and there is a vehicle coming at you and you are at the front of the tractor pulling a 40 foot box, which way do you go??? Thanks for the info. This needs to be looked into, and removed!!

Well, as I said, you would only hit the rev limiter with an automatic if you manually downshifted and held it there. There's no real reason to run the engine at 5500+ rpm, even when passing, since it is well past its max power band at that point.

And, good luck on defeating the rev limiter. As far as I know, it's hard coded into the ECU. In fact, the "limiter" may be nothing more than the fact that the fuel injectors simply can't cycle any faster than that. Or that's the limit of how fast the 1980's era 8-bit microprocessor (Intel 8051) can do all of the table lookups and properly fire the spark plugs and injectors.

RonJR thanks for the reply, I my have done just that. Thinking back as I was passing and felt that we did not have enough power, I hit the button and dropped out of overdrive which would kicked up the RPM.s. dumb dumb dumb....:frusty: You half to remember, my main driver is a 1971 chevy pickup with out all these buttons and levers. I may be to old to change.....

My mileage is up to 15.8 I can live with that, truck only gets 10 on a good day.
