fuel problem i think ?

hi everyone, im new to this so please bare with me.
i have a 92 4runner 3.0 v6.
i have only had it for a couple of months and have been driving mostly on the road, but on the weekend i went offroading and all was fine, awesome in fact. then i got back onto the main road and started my drive home and it started jumping and bunny hopping anywhere from 3500rpm and above, i pulled over and turned the car off, started it again and it drove fine for awhile then started doing the same thing, once again i turned it off, restarted it and it drove fine for awhile and this kept happening the whole way home.
once i got home and let it sit for an hour i took it for a drive round the streets and it drove like a dream.
could anyone tell me if this could be a contaminated fuel tank? my idea was that while offroading the fuel in the tank had been slushing crap around and when i finally got out on the road and got the revs up a bit the pump was sucking it up and blocking any access.
could this happen or does this sound right? cheers for any help, input, or suggestions anyone might have.

It's possible. Replace the fuel filter and disect the old one to see if it's clogged up.

Has the truck ever sat for a long time? Months or even years? If so that could be the case and I would do what fourwd1 says. If that doesn't work, check everything else....maf sensor, tps, injectors. There's so many different things that can cause that with a fuel injected engine. It could even be a crank angle sensor bc thats what tells the injectors when to dump fuel and spark plugs when to spark. But the fuel filter would definitely be the first thing to check.

thanks guys, it has a brand new genuine fuel filter and is still doing the same thing. only after going over bumpy surfaces, around town it drives fine, it had been sitting for months and the fuel had been run dead empty. do you think cleaning out the fuel tank would do any good? i drained it quickly through the plug and there was alot of sand and stuff that came out but the drain plug is not at the bottom most point of the tank so it would not have released all the muck that was in there.
the other thing is i dont know how hard it is to completly remove the tank?

Could be the in-tank filter on the pick-up is clogged.
But I'd clean that tank whether it's the cause or not.

Dropping the tank is easy enough. 3 bolts at the filler neck. 3 bolts at the front of the tank. 2 bolts at the rear. Disconnect the wiring and hoses.

But the fact that it drives OK for awhile, then acts up may be a heat related problem with a sensor.

Definitely pull the tank and clean it thoroughly and disconnect all fuel lines and blow some berrymans through it. It may take a whole day but its worth it. I had to do the same thing to my old 300zx tt, and it sat for 6 years.
