Fuel Pump doesn't prime but starts

I have an 88 V6 Auto 4Runner and I noticed that the fuel pump doesn't prime with the ignition on. Sometimes it starts up right away and sometimes it take a little longer to start. Any ideas?

A 25+ yr old pump?
Maybe that's part of the problem.
