fuel pump runs when engine off?

I'm a newbie here and this is my first posting--I have a 2011 4Runner. I have noticed two nights in a row a sound coming from my garage at night and upon investigating it sounds like my fuel pump is running--hours after I shut the engine off. Has anyone else had this issue and if so, how was it resolved?
I started my engine for a minute and shut it off which stopped the noise from the fuel pump.

Probably the EVAP system. I haven't noticed it in the 4R, but my 05 Tacoma used to do it. My guess: it's normal. Typically happened about 45 minutes after shutdown and then every three hours or so after that. I could tell because I had my fog lights bypassed into that circuit, so they'd come on whenever the system was running if I left the switch on.

5th Gen manual actually mentions it somewhere. Edit: Page 24 of my 2013 Manual under "For Your Information":
Noise from under vehicle after turning off the engine
Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel evaporation leakage check and it does not indicate a malfunction.

Noise at rear of 4Runner when engine turned off.

I noticed a noise at the rear of my 4Runner after it had been turned off for a while. I found in the owners manual the following "Approximately 5 hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of the fuel evaporation leakage check and it does not indicate a malfunction."
 
So glad I found this thread! After 5 yrs of ownership, tonight was the first night I walked out into the garage and heard this sound. It freaked me out! I was convinced that my car was going to catch fire and explode sometime during the night. Can't believe I've never heard this before.

You know what else will save you lots of trips to your dealer? :rtfm:

Read your owner's manual. Because it explains this noise right there somewhere around page 24.
 
Just experienced this for The first time, while setting up for trick-or-treators tonight -great timing- figured the truck was going to suenly explode or burn out the fuel pump motor-
QUESTION- Could this test that occurs 5hrs after I have run the truck, every time I have rune the truck, be responsible for killing my battery off so quickly? Dealer has replaced by battery after just one year- now this one always seems to be in the 12.5-13v range - when it was brand new the battery would be in the 14v+ range. Just curious if running the battery every single time for 12 min is killing my battery sooner?
Second question- is this a. Good reason to get one of those crossover batteries that is Good at both CCA and marine type long draw power source use?
