Fuel pump/Sending unit

A few days ago I started noticing my fuel gauge fluctuating slightly while driving down a semi flat road ( no major inclines/declines ). By slightly I mean from 3/4 tank to just barely above the 1/2 mark. After doing some research I found out that the fuel pump and sending unit are not a assembly and have to be replaced individually. I know that there is a a access panel under the rear seat for the fuel pump, but is there one for the sending unit or can it be accessed through the same panel? I think I also need to replace the fuel pump its self, I started hearing a slight whine today when standing outside the truck.

Unfortunately, you have to drop the tank to replace the sending unit.

Here's what the tank(see pic) looks like when it's out of the truck. I had just washed the tank down to clean it off and touch up any corrosion spots. You might consider replacing the fuel pressure regulator when you do the pump. Toyota has also upgraded the sending unit and fuel pump assembly gaskets on the tank , which I'd recommend picking up. They seem to have been problematic in the past.
The access panels under the rear seat will give you just enough room to disconnect the wiring harness and fuel feed lines. I went with a Koyo pump and Denso regulator. Best of luck with it.

Well crap..that's not what I wanted to hear. Found a "factory replacement" sending unit online for $35 and a denso fuel pump kit for $111. Woohoo more money! Not. Just dumped about $150 in yesterday with plugs, wires, coil, o2 sensor, and a mobile 1 oil change. I believe there's a 5th gen in my near future

Dropping the tank is not hard, it's just smelly.
