I have a 1999 4Runner, 2WD, 4cyl that started acting nuts about a week ago. Initially, I thought it was a battery issue since there was unexpectedly no power to the car when I tried to leave two Saturdays ago. I changed the battery out and the lights/radio/etc came on, but car still would not start.
Yesterday, roommate and I worked on it and it seems to be a fuel issue. While he turned the key, I sprayed starter fluid into the air intake hose and that got it started for about three seconds before it died. Fuses all seem to be ok, with the exception of the fuel relay (I'm thinking that's in the fuel tank?). I picked up a fuel filter, but a replacement of it was damn near impossible as it sits under the engine and was very difficult to get to-it has not been replaced yet.
My roommate had a thought that maybe the gas gauge was broke and we put a couple of gallons of gas + fuel injector cleaner. Wouldn't you know...it started up last night. I had my doubts about that diagnoses so I went to put fuel in and it only took about 4 gallons before overflow. Obviously 4+2 is not equal to anywhere near 14 gallons. On the way back from the station, while waiting at a red light, it started sputtering (right word?) and seemed like it wanted to die. I just brought the beast back home and parked it.
Any ideas of where to go next? Proceed with fuel filter +/- fuel relay?
