Fuel Tank Relocation (and new Rear Bumper design)

Waiting on a response from my fastner guy on those bolts. But also give rainbow bolt & supply a call. Here is their info:

Edit - my guy (fastenal) can't get the m12x1.25 x 30mm. Are you sure it's 1.25 and not 1.75? Still check with rainbow.

Thanks for checking! Yeah, everything is fine thread back there.

eimkeith What wall thickness are you using for the 40.5" receiver cross bar? Just starting to collect the needed parts.

I was going to go .250", but DaMonkey used .188" on his (similar design) and he's got me rethinking the .250 now...

- there's a 3.75-pound difference between the two at that length, btw.

I went down the road of looking for fine button head metric fasteners a while back and was unsuccessful as well.

Keith - I really think .188 is up for the job. I've loaded my trailer with enough tongue weight to send my headlights into the night (no bags). I dunno, I bet I put 600# tongue weight on. The receiver comes directly out of hole in back bumper and IF there was any flex at all, I would see the gap under the receiver move and it does not at all. I've jumped on the tongue with that weight to watch for any flex and it just isn't there.

With that said, my square tube also has your tank bracket welded to it across the back, and that's cheating big time. Ton of structure from that. Even without that, I'd do .188 again, .250 is just so monster - but that's nice too. 3.75# is not much, but those things do add up. I believe more important than wall of cross tube is a good design to sleeve the frame as deep as possible.

These trucks just don't tow well, I max my trailer at about 3800# and I hate driving it like that. Wheezes and wags. Lose the trailer and find a trail :)

Sorry for crappy resolution. Attachments here need to be 167kb lol. How generous. I was linking to hosted pics at tinypic but I just got notice they will shut down so any past links to hosted pics there will be a dead link :/ Most forums now are set up to host with reasonable resolution.

But in pic you can see what I'm talking about with your tank bracket when it was mocked before welding. That in process pic was also before frame was sleeved, where I did use .250 plate and gusseted.

ive recently lifted my 4runner and i now have this ugly gas tank that is hanging down lower than id like staring at me. i will eventually have to read through this entire thread to determine if im smart enough to do this.

Thanks for checking! Yeah, everything is fine thread back there.

that being said. 1.25 thread pitch in an m12 designation is an extra fine thread. combine that with the fact you want a button head hex is probably the problem you cannot find it. you should be able to find x30 shank length w/ button head in the normal or fine thread pitches. are you absolutely married to extra fine thread? apologies if its answered recently, i havent gone back a couple of pages yet.

m12 x 1.75 = normal
m12 x 1.5 = fine thread

interesting, i would not have expected extra fine threads to be inside a nut welded into the frame. it looks like i will need to read this entire thread over.

eimkeith - Say you wanted to keep your 265/75/16 spare in the factory location with your bumper. Would it still fit with the necessary F150 tank retrofit crossmember?

I'm also curious about the side view bumper aesthetics while sitting on that same size tire. I'm impressed that the design provides the clearance for 35's, but all that clearance might look like something is missing while running a smaller tire. Anyone have pics?

once upon a time I had a 1967 Kaiser Jeep M715 military truck (fun) - and fine/extra fine threads were used all over that thing. (just a compare & contrast note)

you know, I'm not sure, but I sorta doubt it - I think Toyota left the frame ends open because of the spare tire..?

I'm working with an awesome vendor on flare extensions for folk who want to continue the factory flare aesthetic onto the bumper - this might be a solution for you. - it will be a while, as it is lower on the priority list, but it's in the grand plan.

Comparing the dimension between my panhard frame mount/frame crossmember to the rearmost part of my spare with the dimension of your panhard frame mount to fuel relocation member would tell us, if you wanted to measure it at a convenient moment. I'll get that measurement tonight.

I have the sr5 mini-flares so I'm not too worried about that, but I'd love to see a full vehicle side picture of someone with a stockish tire. Hopefully we get some installed pics here soon :snacker: Keep up the awesome man!

I’m in for run #2 think that will be this year? Think it will be around the time the non BL adapters are available?

For future reference, there is no way fitting even a stock spare with the f150 tank relocation member would work. Just eyeballing it made that pretty evident because the spare fills the entire space between the panhard frame support and the factory tow bar, which itself is a couple inches further to the rear than where the new crossmember would mount. :tsk:

Put me on the list for run #2.

right on! do you mind sending me an email at keith AT eimkeith dot com with your full name, billing & shipping addresses, and telephone (for shipping)?

- I'm trying to keep all that stuff in one place and keep track of first come, first serve chronology.

Yeah, I thought I recalled the spare protruding past the end of the frame rails - that's probably why the 4Runners didn't get a true bumper from the factory...
