I am really interested in this mod also. For I don't really like the amber either. I too have driven cars with indiglo or white gauges and that doesn't bother me.

Thanks for postin the pics. I wish I had known the FJ offered those switches before I bought the factory Yota switches for my Hellas. May end up swappin them out for the FJ switches when I get a chance.

This is great! I least I now know you can do the 4x4 selector switch and HVAC unit background as well. Wasn't going to go forward with this unless I knew everything could be done in uniform. Looking forward to the writeup!!!

So the 4x4 selector is my next project. when you replace the single LED, you get a hotspot on the 4H leaving the 2H and 4L dim. (you can see what i'm referring to on the picture of my center console) slvrAZtaco found a way to drill the distribution lens and install 2 additional LED's. I'll share the info once i get it.

Yeah i was about to buy the taco switch and i stumbled across these. they have a different fj switch with a different image on top (offroad light image) and its $12 more.

Hey everyone,

I finally decided to swap my interior lights from orange to white this saturday. I was inspired by <a href="http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=180314">Jotaro's</a> swap on his Tacoma.

<a href="http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=229125">slvrAZtaco</a> was the first one i found who completed the swap on a 4th Gen 4Runner (if there is someone else who did it first, i apologize). slvrAZtaco's work helped me out immensely.

There are a few that i didn't swap out because i got tired of soldering (window switch, airbag indicator in center console and cup holders). The gauge cluster and steering wheel controls require surface mount PLCC-2 SMT LED's where the rest are normal LED/resistors i got in bulk.

The most time consuming job was taking the old bulbs out from each switch and replacing them with an LED and resistor since i was using the original bulb holders.

Here is a pic of the gauge cluster after the swap:

Things to note:
1). I am by no means an expert in soldering, electronics or ohm's law. I have basic electrical skills with a free sat this past weekend.
2). I know i have light creep behind the speedometer. this is caused by the way the light is distributed to the entire gauge.
3). I also understand the argument regarding bright white gauges and it's effect on the eyes creating a slower response in recognizing dim objects....i've driven cars with white gauges before and it never bothered me.

If anybody is interested i can post detailed pics of the swap, but for now, i'm just so excited that i did it i had to share it with someone.

borgzman, here is where i purchased the surface mount LED's:
<a href="http://www.oznium.com/plcc-2">Surface Mount PLCC-2 SMT LEDs</a>. They have the same voltage rating as stock so no need for a dropping resistor. just a straight swap.

CJ3Flyr, yes the dimmer switch works the same as stock.

Hope its not too much to ask but can you give us a rundown on the locations you used teh solder in Leds and which locations use the socket bulbs?

Here you go: DIY: Interior LED swap (cluster, HVAC, switches, window, *steering wheel)

I know it's a long thread and the first page was cut in half however, i posted the rest later on. Other members have shown the differences between the years and models for reference.

x2. I HATE orange dash lights. I wanted to do blue originally but after seeing this, Im going with white. I ordered a few things from oznium before, great company only regret I had is that they wouldnt let me pick up the parts since they were a mail order company. (the warehouse was down the street from my house in martinez). Got them in the mail the next day though.
