Full roof rack with sunroof question

This is for you guys running a full roof rack with a sunroof. Is it a waste to spend the extra cash for the removable insert on the gobi stealth or others, not sure if anyone else does this, or do you find yourself using it? I’m about to pop on a gobi, I know I know, but my wife really likes the looks of it and it’s her truck. I’m just the DD on long trips and the loader and unloaded of all the gear.

Without the sunroof insert there is no way to stand out the top of your 4runner with a high capacity AR clipping zombies while your co driver has the wheel with the cruise set to 60mph bombing through the dessert -

Get the insert, you will find you leave it on for 2 years, for that Jurassic park feel, then take it off realizing you like to be able to stick your hand out the top and the extra sun rays and leave it in the garage for another 2 years, and move it twice - true story.

I saw it as something that gave me options, and came with no real downsides except the costs which IIRC was minimal through the GB, no idea what they cost now as "options"

I was thinking more on the lines of stand out of the top throwing empty beer bottles at road signs but to each there own.

I got it because on the GB it was free, it was either that or a free ladder. What I really should have gotten was removable cross bars, but live and learn. I keep it installed so I can haul more stuff up there, plus I actually hate the direct sunlight beating in on me, so it provides a bit of shade on those days where sun just won't quit.

The road noise with lights and roof rack is pretty terrible, so it's highly unlikely you'll drive with it open ever again. You can still pop it open (at like 15mph). I don't miss having the open space above the sun roof.

I have a sunroof and full length GOBI, love the extra floor space and never really opened the sunroof all the way anyways (mostly just vented).

Trail Duty was offering a free ladder, HD hatch struts and a free accessory - which could be the insert. I went back and forth between the sunroof insert and the ratchet straps, eventually landed on the straps as I think I’ll use them more than the insert.

Decided to get the removable panel. Reason being, the kids really love popping their heads out of the sunroof when we are getting ice cream or in any parking lot for that matter. The panel will come in handy when loading the rack up. Thanks for the help

Cant go wrong either way but it does allow for some flexibility having the option to keep in. Enjoy the wait :yo:

I don’t have an insert. I rarely close the sunroof cover so the light can come in. I often drive with the sunroof open. The fairing does a great job of directing the airflow over the roof and I don’t get any buffeting of wind trapped inside. So I vote no on the sunroof insert. You paid extra for a sunroof. Seems like a shame to cover it.

I have a full length FrontRunner. The cross bars block some of the light coming through. Living in AZ,I like having the diffused light versus direct sun. Plus, I needed the acreage up there for tying stuff down.

I got my Gobi RR used off of the FB marketplace. Very happy with it, just wish it had come with the Sunroof insert. I'll eventually buy it. I always find something else more important to the spend the $200 on. When I am not using my RTT on trips, I wish I had that area to use on the RR.
