hey guys,


recently, when i fulled up the Gas tank, gas milage display only around 270 to 280. is that right? a while back it use to read around 320 to 330. is there a reason, why it gone down? do i need to change my OS?

I don't know what to tell you. Mine always reads in the nieghborhood of about 400+. So if yours has always read in the low 300 and has now went into the 200 range I would say something is wrong.

It is estimated by the on board computer. Depending on how full the tank is and the mpg it calculates, it will give you a distance. Try this next time. As you go into the gas station, reset the mpg and coast next to the pump. Your goal is to get the mpg to give you a high number. Fill up and then it should reset to a higher number.

How much did you put in the tank? I have noticed if I only partially fill the tank (or if I fill it from half a tank to full) my readout varies. Mine always reads between 430 and 450, but I have seen variation down to 410 (if one of the above conditions are right and the moon is full). Wait for another tank or two and see if it returns to normal, but don't fill up unless you have 30 miles or less on the range indicator.
 
Whenever I fill up it says about 320, but at some point during the tank it recalibrates itself, as I usually get about 260-280 miles per tank. And by per tank I mean I drive to about 1/8 tank left.
 
Yea I think its influenced by current engine conditions. I dont bother looking at that anymore. When it says I have 50 miles left I can go about 90 :awais: I just watch the needle now. I keep a pad for logging all the data so I can update my MPG spreadsheet though. Im averaging right around 400 mi per tank combined.
 
I have had my 06 SR5 V6 for a little over 6000 miles, i got it brand new. It has always said 400-420 after filling up, even going from a 21 mpg avg down to a 19 mpg (computer averaged and more city miles).

How do you reset it?
 

After you fill up your tank and prepare to pull back onto the road, reset both your "Average MPG" and "Average MPH" readings -- and then wait a few minutes. Your "Distance To Empty" reading will then shoot up from 180 or 200 all the way to 380 or 400.

Even so, the trip computer in the 4Runner is pessmistic regarding your mileage until empty; but is optimistic when it comes to your miles per gallon. To avoid the risk of running out, I never let it get much below 1/4 tank.

But if that is the only gripe about this vehicle, I would consider yourself quite fortunate.

The RANGE reading is based on the ECU learning your driving habits and how aggressively or non-aggressively you drive. Mine (4.0L V6) used to show ~420-429 during my break-in period, but dropped to ~395 a few months later as I began driving harder. When I used to do alot of highway miles, it showed ~385. Now, 2 years 3 months & 50k miles later, mine shows 375 regardless of whether I stop filling after the pump stops on its own or if I put an add'l 50 cents in after it stops. Even when I drive conservatively and get good mileage, the number on the next fill up doesn't change much, maybe 5 or so more.

That seems to be true for me. When I tow my range reading shows 250-270 miles. When not towing the reading shows 360-380 miles.
 
My impression is that the computer adjusts full tank "miles to empty" based on average mpg of some number of previous tanks, or an average over some prolonged period of time. When new, mine would estimate 320 miles/tank. After several tanks of 400-450 miles/tank, it has worked its way up to 400+. A long trip with some towing, giving me only about 320 miles/tank caused the full tank estimate to start down again, but never did get as low as 320 miles.
 
I SEE I SEE...I GUESS IT MITE BE RIGHT THEN. BECAUSE I GET ABOUT 14, 15MPG CITY AND 17, 18HIGHWAY. I GET SH1TTIE MPG LIVING IN NEW YORK CITY. I CAN SAY I DRIVE 80% CITY AND 20% HIGHWAY. ITS ALL STOP AND GO IN NYC.
 
If you still think something has changed, check your tire pressure. Also, how many miles does your car have now? 02 sensors seem to be critical to great gas mileage as well.

I think the needle and the computer are both good ways to gauge how much you have. A couple of weeks ago I wanted to push it and see just how low i could go. When the low gas light came on it scared me because i have never let it get that low. So I drive home from work and then the next morning i drove to work and kept checking the display. The needle was sitting on E and I have never been so scared in my life. I drove to one gate to get on base but it was closed so i had to turn around and go to another... When I finally got to the gas station the display said that I had 6 miles left!!!!! I know that its bad to do but I really wanted to see how far i could go. I dont think I will ever get below 1/4 tank EVER again though. Oh when I fill up my display usually shows about 370 miles. I am going to try the reset and coast next time I go to fill up. When it says "0" you still have gas in the tank. When you are towing its pretty damn accurate, ask me how i know.
