2 wires going to a chip doesn't make any sense at all..................you need 2 just to power the thing. Typically these chips that plug into the IAT sensor are just a resistor. A little trick for the motor to think the air intake is cooler. If they are actually using a chip, then they are just piggybacking on the internal resistance and using that instead of just a dumb .05 resistor. Chip looks more like $60 worth than a single resistor.

Thanks for the confirmation. My brother has a Dodge Diesel with a performance chip. He had amazing results. But, I haven't heard of anyone employing a chip in a gas engine for normal driving with great results.

I guess if the engine mapping could be improved that much in our 4runners...it would be in the vehicle to begin with...
 
Diesels are a different story............. they can see huge performance gains (I know, my Dodge is chipped as well). It is possible to chip gas engines, some do a make a little improvement, but they do not just plug into the intake temp sensor.

Please someone tell me Im wrong, I would like to get a little more out of the 4R.
 
The IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor is nothing more than a thermistor. A passive component that changes resistance inversely proportional to temperature.

From the repair manual:

You see, by adding resistance to the thermistor (IAT), the 'measured' temperature appears lower to the ECU.

This product DOES NOT reprogram the ECU as they state on the website. Do not waste your money. Or if you'd prefer, send me the $60 and I'll send you a bunch of different through-hole resistors that you could stick in your IAT to get the same results.

Not just deisels but any turbo charged car can have a chip (or a much cheaper manual boost controller) and see power gains since the chip is just delaying the signal to the wastegate allowing the turbo to build more boost and with the chip it can be programmed to run different fuel maps.
I had a 1st gen turbo Eclipse and with just a simple boost controller I dropped about a full second off my 1/4 mile time but I still needed an Air/fuel flow converter to change my fuel maps to my liking.
 
doesn't even have to be F/I.. the ECU should have the option to be adjusted which is what toyota doesn't allow.
