Garmin - SUV Icon

Hey thanks! Just picked one up. I almost bought a 200w from best buy for the same price!

No problem. Are you a member of costco? I have none in my area. What would happen if i used someone else's member number. Would i not be able to return it? Enjoy the 650, and if you are a member of costco enjoy the great return policy.

ALT4r now you have me working on this instead of doing my job! haha, I think I will have to create my 4R, I read the entire thread you linked to and I am going to give it a shot, one cool thing I found was that a few people said try and find an interactive 3D model of your vehicle it will make the new icon look great, well of course Toytota has this page for the 4R and it has a perfect interactive 3D model of the 4R, so it should look pretty good on the Garmin.

This will allow me to get the required views! I'll see when I can find some non work time to get ths done, and then I can post the file for others to use.

Yes i would appreciate it if you would post it! I'm thinkin of picking up the 650...

If you get this done can you please post it here for everyone to use, that would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure on the nuvi 200w but my nuvi 370 will place me exactly where I am even if in the middle of the woods. It has a coordinates lock, so you could save your current location as anything you would like. For instance I take the Nuvi out of my car and use it to mark some of my hunting locations in the woods. But I am not sure if this is a feature of the 300 and 600 series only.
To expand a little bit, mine even placed me while I was in Istanbul a year or so ago. So long as it can see the sky and lock on the satellites, it can place you just about anywhere in the world.

haha, yeah mine "worked" in the Philippines too. It didn't show any streets or anything, but it did show me in a lot of green area - LOL

I take it this Nuvi is like the latest greatest version ?

Which model is a good one to get ? Whats the difference ?

Do you all hard mount or hard wire ? or can you set it up portable. It really wouldn't leave my truck so it really does not matter . Does it plug in to power ports or what powers it ?
There are some good sites. One that several of us have used is http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=172 which covers just the Nuvi models.

That site covers lots of different units, though, so you can go to http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/default.asp to see all the boards they have.

Sure thing, I will post the file when I am done with it. It will take me a few hours to complete the whole thing. I was working on it for an hour last night and finished 4 of the views (only 32 more to go!), you can see in the middle the 4 pictures of the silver 4R. I am using the white SUV file from Garmin as a template to make sure I line everything up. When I am done you guys should be able to take the file and if you want convert it to use in a photo editor and change the color of the 4R to what you want and remove the hood scoop if you don't have a sport.

I really don't know how difficult this is, is there any way that you can post 2 files, one with the hood scoop and one without?

Yeah I should be able to do that when I am done, won't take much time to go back and photoshop the scoop out.

Thanks man I would have no clue how to take the hood scoop out; I hope I can figure out how to make it black. What file format will it be in when you post it?

Wonder how the black will look in night mode on the Garmin? Mabye a red dot on the roof to see it at night.

I can post the files in two formats. .png (which you will open to edit in a paint program)

and also .srf which is the Garmin format for their icons. If you edit the .png file you can use the conversion tool found here

http://techmods.net/nuvi/ that ALT4R linked too to convert your file.

he will probably post the garmin vehicle format or just png. Eitherway, using the link i gave earlier you can convert to png if needed. png is a pretty basic image format that most editing software can handle. To make it black all you have to do is go through with the filler tool and color everything, although you may need layers to make the windows stand out (being black and all). Reflections etc.

edit: for some reason bucky's post just came up for me. Thanks for posting your work bucky, have you tried it out yet?

The hoodscoop may block the satellite signals to your Nuvi... :D

IMHO, the black will be tough to see on the GPS, even though the "all vehicles" download has some dark-colored icons. A bright color, like the blue triangle has, might work better.

Just my $0.02.

Good point, I never thought of that

:bash:

I guess I'll have to make it silver or red or something.

I enjoy taking my Garmin Nuvi 200 on the plane with me. If you're close to the window, you can usually get enough satellites. Its like your own moving map display...it also shows your speed. Mine is maxed out at 596 mph. Sweet!

Is it legal to use one on a plane?

Very cool, I did not know you could use them on the plane, I suppose if you are using the audio book feature or listening to mp3's it makes sense.

I was thinking about making a post where people took a photo of their garmin with the top speed displayed, but I thought this would lead to dangerous competition, but of course your speed would be tops!
