Gas Guage USED TO go down too fast...

I did this, which I found here, Thanks again dudes, totally worked!

This is for 1999 & 2000 model year 4Runners.

1. After replacing the meter circuit plate or inclination sensor, move the vehicle to a level location. (A surface with an inclination no greater than +- 0.5" is the target flatness)

2. With the ignition switch in the "OFF(ACC)" position, press and hold the trip reset button.

3. Continue pressing the trip reset button while turning the ignition switch to the "ON" position.

4. Within 5 seconds of turning the ignition switch "ON", release the trip switch, press the trip switch 3 times, and on the third press hold the switch for 5 seconds. The buzzer will sound for 1 second at 800Hz.

5. After the buzzer stops, release the trip switch.

6. Press the trip switch one more time and hold for 5 seconds. Once more, the buzzer will sound for 1 second at 800 Hz.

7. The calibration process is completed.

Note: If in the operation of step 6, the buzzersounds higher than that of step 5, turn the ignition switch to "OFF" position and repeat the setting procedure from step 2.

I didn't replace a sensor, just recalibrated my gas gauge using this reset. It used to drop from full after only a few miles and then within another 150 the low fuel light would come on. Way more accurate now.

yeah my gas gauge is beyond wacky, sometimes says empty for a while after pumping the tank full etc...

Is there a method to do this to a 98?
I went off roading and when i got home me gas gage got stuck on empty and will not move... Any thoughts? :shrug:

Are you saying that this procedure will not improve the fuel gauge reading and it only makes sense to do if you replaced meter or sensor?

You can try it as it certainly wont hurt. But it is a calibration procedure only. The real fix is under TSB EL010-00, that came out in August 2000. It requires changing out the combination plate, fuel sender and suction
tube assemblies then performing the calibration procedure.

Everyone who has a gas gauge that fluctuates every time you turn the key off then back on, i know there is a tsb for replacement of the fuel sending unit and if it continues to replace the gas needle portion of the cluster. this was a big known problem for the runners. i will check at worj today what years it applies to so this is something else for everyone to think about...

See three posts above you. TSB EL010-00 is what you are referring to, it apply only to certain vins within the 99-00 model year.

So how does it work with a TSB item if the vehicle is OOW already (as all of our 3rd gens are?) Do they still cover it as a warranteed repair?

well my runner let me down without gas and gauge read middle tank full, so, its the second time it stops there maybe I gotta change it... do you think it will get better or fix the problem with that calibrating metod?
there most be some other ways cause i paid for get down the tank and was difficult then we move the gauge and after a month failed again .... so????? whats next..... do it again???? any advises?
