gas indicator

This might have been discuss in the past. When I first purchase my 2005 4wd v8 4runner my gas fuel indicator (The digital reading) read 350 or 300 something, can't really remember. Now it only read 243 or 242 no more and sometimes less. Can someone share a similar experience or am I the only one going through this? Is there something wrong with the gas tank sensors not reading the amount of fuel in it properly?:confused: :bash:

That sounds like the number of miles left in the tank - the "range".

That number is computed by multiplying the amount of gas in the tank (based on what the fuel gauge says) by your average MPG.

It sounds like the trip computer is figuring that you're getting lower MPG than it first thought. Maybe it was up around 16-17 at first... now it's around 13. Have your driving habits changed? Maybe a lot of highway driving back then, and now mostly stop-and-go city driving?
 
Yeah that is the Range indicator, not the amount of gas in your tank. Hit reset to reset the calculations and start from scratch. If you hit Mode you can see your Average Speed and MPG as well.

Tried that still the same though I do alot of stop n go commute. I know about the average range and hitting the reset button but still when I fill up with gas from say half way the max number I get is 243. When I first brought the truck now that I think about was about 370 on the first reading of the digital display counter.:confused:
 
There is no way yours displayed 370 when you first purchased it. Everytime I fill up my tank, it resets to somewhere between 320 to 335 miles. I have a 2wd V6 tho. I'm ony had my t4r for 4 months now and it's been consistent in showing 320-335 miles range after a fill up.

Oh there definitely is a way.... :cool:

My truck consistently gets 390 when I fill it up. When I first got it, it would read 410 or so but it learned I had a heavy foot :D

Did you try to reset all the modes? Avg Speed, MPG and Range? I don't know what to say otherwise, maybe a faulty unit?

Hmm, everytime I fill up, I manual reset the Avg Speed and MPG. The range resets it correct?

When you fill it up, after the pump stops, do you continue to pump in more gas and try to really top it off, or just stop there? In my 3rd gen, I was able to put over another gallon before the intial stop. I haven't tried to top off my 4th gen yet because I do not know how much more it can take and don't want to spill the gas.
 
JMT529 - Nope, I never try to fill to the very very top. Once the pump stops automatically, I wait a few seconds for the last drops of gas to drip off and then I'm done. I've always received close to 400 on the RANGE after fillups.
 
Dam, what's wrong with mine then. I've never gotten over 335. I always put Shell's 87 grade if that matters.
 
I get 399 after every fillup now. I used to get only 310 when I first bought it so maybe the computer needs long term data or something? I have yet to get 400, the 4runner is f'n with my mind again.

Hopefully this is the case. I think about 3 months when it was brand new, it use to only read about 300. Now mine is up to 335. How long did it take before you got that high of a reading?

Tried all of that use to reall get 370 when first bought,now I get 243 the most. Maybe like some of you have said that the truck learned I have a heavy foot. I almost do only local driving. Took on a long trip but the computer reading still read 243 at best. I may try disconnecting the battery and hope the computer really resets.

I have a little over 9k miles on my 4runner and it's been almost 8 months since I first bought it. When I first filled up for the very first time I was a bit pissed it was in the low 300's. Now, eight months and 9k miles later it has always displayed 399. Keep in mind though that most of my driving is mostly highway. I use my 4runner to commute and go everywhere. I have a daily weekday highway commute of 40-70 miles depending if I need to drive farther into San Francisco and drop my kids off at my parents' house. I have always pumped 91 octane, not recently though due to gas prices and so went back to 87 (might just use 89 or 91 during the summer for towing). I've rarely reset the average mpg or mph readings either so maybe the computer needs a longer history of data or something. In fact, I don't pay much attention to that computer anyway. I just track my range via the needle and the trip meter. I just check my tire pressure and oil once a week and try to cruise most of the time. I'm not a heavy foot driver either.
 
I just filled up and my Range indicator estimated 476. I filled up with 465 miles on my tank with 2 gallons left. Came out to be a little over 22 mpg (computer said 24.3 mpg). I have 05 V6 4X4 running 85 octane. I reset my MPG at each fill up.

Wow that is awesome MPG jmtreetop! I wonder if the higher elevation has anything to do with your better mileage.

Are you sure you were not reading the gas info of your civic?
That might be the best MPG of anybody on this forum.
I get 370 on my computer and average of 18.5 mpg (calculated not computer) Mine is 4x4 v8 05.
 
50k miles on my 4Runner, currently reads 380ish to 390ish at every fill up. 93 octane. Before I put the 265/70s on it consistently read 400-415, I have seen it read as high as the 420s. On a 800mile plus trip to MI from NC I actually drove 420 miles on a tank and the gas light was not on yet. Granted mine is a V-6 4x2.

Sounds like a very heavy foot or a bad sensor/computer.
