Gas light on

I always try to fill up as close to 1/4 tank as possible. It depends on my work. I altered my drive to work to the route 422 city route to save 12 miles a day. But it allows me to drive my 5 day work stretch without filling up.

1/4 tank is 12 gal to fill.

I've only run my '98 out of gas once in the seventeen years I've owned it and even then I could only get 17.8 gallons in it and that included the filler neck. I know Toyota says these trucks hold more than that but I've never been able to come close.

As for how far I can get when the light comes on... The farthest I've pushed it was 35 miles but I know I could've gotten a more.

I ran out of gas once, because my gauge went full retard, as it does occasionally, and my reserve light never came on. I seriously thought something had completely failed in my ignition system. I walked 2.5 miles home, then carried 2 gallons of gas back to it. When it fired up right away, I was 90% sure I had run out of gas. When I drove a mile to a gas station and put 16.2 gallons in it (after the 2 gal. from home), I came to the conclusion that mine really does have the published 18.5 gallon capacity, which gives about 18.2 usable gallons.

Along those lines, I almost ran out of gas 2 times previously, also because of the gauge. The first time, I was literally turning into a gas station, when it happened, so I just coasted to a pump. The 2nd time, I was at a stoplight across from a station, going downhill ever-so-slightly. I put one leg out on the ground, got it rolling through the intersection, then gravity took over and I rolled up to a pump.

Now I always start looking for a gas station at 300 miles (350-375 on an interstate road trip). I also always carry an empty 1 gallon can in the back (of all of my vehicles, and I make sure my daughters do the same). I do not ever want to fully run out of gas again. That sucks hind teat.

My dads runner 2.7 99 4x4 used to get good 400-415 miles per tank before reload, everytime we drove to NJ from MA, and it was consistent. It was stock and was carying us and about 200 kilos of printing press tools.

Light did come on at around 360, but we never ran out of fuel. He did fill it up to the cap, tho. What we found was that once in a while, the runner would get less than 400. But then the next time again 400, which to us it meant that the quality of fuel varies.

My diesel runner here in Bulgaria rarely gets to on 28mpg, but once in a while it does. Usually its 20-22. Diesel fuel quality fluctuates much more here tho, and fuel prices are much higher so there isnt a difference in owning a Runner here or in the US when it come to fuel. Maybe the insurance costs make a difference as they are much lower here because of the standard of living.

The second Runner I bought here in BG, has bad compression on the 2.7 and it's 2WD. It gets around 300miles max. I did ran it down dry a few times to see how it will do. 312. Its reliable but not economical.
The pump wouldnt burn unless you intentionally keep the ignition switch to ON after the engine has run dry.

Last summer my dad dicomissioned his 99 Runner and shipped the engine and some other parts to Bulgaria and once I install it in yhe 2WD, I will let you guys know how it runs with the fuel here. Hopefully soon after they lift the quarantine curfew.
