gas mileage decrease with 285s

Ya I am leaning more towards keeping them but I bet it will be a pig with 285s. Right now with 265/70 it feels kind of slow. I'll admit I need to check my throttle cable though

I've got 285 75 16s , 2.5" lift, stock gears, auto trans and this is what I've been getting . It seems that ECT On helps it. It allows the motor to rev higher before shifting.
 
Running the 285 KM2's right now. I am getting about the same MPG as my 285 all terrains. The KM2's are slightly smaller than my AT's were.

I get about 16-17 mpg average with 80% highway driving.
 
My truck is feeling it big time. I just lifted it last week and was getting exceptional mileage with worn 31's and stock lift. Put on the TRD / LC lift and 33" Treadwrights (which appear to be LARGE 33's and HEAVY) and I'm not getting 2-3 l/100 worse with a very noticeable drop in power.

Ie. 22.5+ MPG to 18 MPG. 4.5 MPG less. Probably worse in the city. That's driving it very easy. If I tried to keep up with traffic it would be 15MPG or less I'm sure. In other words, it's costing me about 15$ in fuel more every tank. May seem like not that much, but multiply that by multiple tanks per week sometimes x 52. Ouch. I'd say an extra $1000 easily a year.

Goes to strengthen my argument that 32's will pay themselves off in gas mileage.

Ya that's one thing that I am worried about. I do 95% city driving where I live right now so I get about 17 mpg. Once I move I will be doing a lot more highway driving so it would be nice to get decent mileage. Maybe the 33s will give me more of an excuse to get a motorcycle :)

Trust me, from a guy who's own plenty of motorcycles, they don't save you money.
 
WHen i was running 33s i was getting 16-17mpg but now that im up to 35s im down to 15mpg. This is all with 4.10 stock gearing... i say if u can live with the power loss and like the look it might be worth it
 
I've averaged 16.5 mpg over my last 6 fill-ups, running 285 BFG A/T's. Probably half city, half interstate driving. And I drive about 70-75 mph on the interstate. IMO the 285's give my Runner the perfect stance...so I'm ok with getting 16-17 mpg, instead of 18-19 mpg with closer to stock tire size. And I don't drive aggressively, so the power loss is no biggie.

So I guess it's a matter of whether or not the extra off-road clearance & look are worth it to you. If the look of a 285 doesn't just make you smile (like it does me), just get rid of the 285's & stay with your smaller tire size.
 
IDk what all these guys are doing to get 16 MPG. Im running 285/75/16 MT's with a 3" toytec lift and im getting 11. Barely. About 200 miles out of a tank. i do live in AK with no highway and a max speed limit of 45 and alot of stop and go but still. Not even near what im hearing from others

In the last 6 months I've changed 1 injector (due to it going out), changed plugs, wires, all 3 coils, swapped stock muffler for 18" Magnaflow and got a K&N drop-in with my deckplate mod. After having the issue with the injector I started putting some Sta-Bil in every other tank to battle the effects of ethanol on my fuel system.

In NO way do I think the Sta-Bil adds anything to my fuel mileage...just using it to counter the ethanol. (Maybe I'm a little paranoid with losing 1 of my 6 injectors & am trying to preserve the other 5, IDK.)

I also put on my ARB bull bar about 3 months ago too...but that really didn't seem to change fuel mileage. I must just drive like a grandpa. :shrug:
 
Thought I would share my experience. I used to get a consistent 400kms a tank before my lift and tire swap. I thought I'd be getting worse mileage with my 285/75/16's but I'm still touching the 400km's a tank mark. Yes the car does feel a bit more sluggish and the driving style never really changed. Mind you I also do have a 5spd manual transmission so this might have something to do with it.
 
1. You pay for the look
2. Be sure to ground-truth your speedometer. If you increase tire radius, you are moving further than the speedo thinks (since it is RPM-based). So a part of the decrease in mileage could only be apparent. I know on mine when the speedo says 60 - I am really doing closer to 65. So then when I calc mileage, add about 10% to get the true MPG.

(and if I am wrong about #2, I'd rather not know about...it makes me feel so much better :biggrin2:)
 
I had every intention of running 285's with my lift, but now that I have it lifted and still running the 265/70's, I'm just going to step up to a 265/75 All-Terrain on some 16x8 Wheels. I really want to run 285's, but I take a lot of highway trips on the weekend, and just don't want to sacrifice my mileage too much just for looks. I really only use the truck off-road for beach trips, and it does great with regular street tires, so I just can't justify the extra cost of the 33's for no real gain for the way I use the truck.

Everyone's truck is different, and everyone's taste is different. If you really want 285's just run them and suck up the extra fuel consumption.
 
It's all about how fast you drive and where you drive.

Driving on rural country roads I get around 17-19
Pure interstate @70; 20
Pure interstate @75; 17
Inner city (Indianapolis) 13-14
Commuting to and from the city on the interstates and some surface streets I get around 17-20

Overall thats a drop of about 2 mpg after I went to 285's...They are far more noticeable in the inner city than on the highway mileage wise

Thats on 285 Pro Comp XTerrains, not exactly a mild mannered tire and with 265,000 on the clock

I was getting 500-530km/tank in and around Calgary with a fairly accurate speedo. Now I'm doing 400KM/tank highway (not corrected) As mentioned above, I am doing 100 at 93ish. At 100 I'm doing 108. Using my GPS to verify the above.

So essentially I could estimate 432km/tank vs 500-530km/tank. I haven't done a full tank of just city driving so I expect 400-430 actual driving like a granny.

This is with a 5speed too which seems to get much better mileage then 3rd gen autos.
